RolandtheMad -- whenever you use realspace to move from place to place (not reccomended until you have good engines), a fuel scoop picks up energy at a slow but constant pace. When you get your engines to a level where you can move anyplace in one turn (around level 10?), you should def. get one and start realspacing places; before that, you only need one if you plan to realspacing around a lot (which depends on where you're going, how often you're going there, and how long it takes you to complete a realspace move).

Ok I`ve read the FAQ and the Newbie guide, but they really don`t detail the game that much. what are all the different technology upgrades for? I know hull gives you cargo space - but what is power for? Cloak?

Power is for Beams and Shields.

Cloak makes you and your planets harder to scan and makes it easier for you to sneak past sector defenses.

              Computer upgrades (primarially) fighter capacity.

You and your panets are harder to scan do to cloak + your ship is harder to see.

I guess I could be wrong -- but I think that those are some of the functions cloak performs. I also think if you're in a sector with someone with a much higher cloak than you have scanners, you often can't see their ship at all, though I don't know the formula for figuring it out...
