    Money!

edit: And it's a safe place to log out when you're ship is higher then lvl 8.
Planets give you more interest then the interstellar bank thingie.
With 3 planets in one sector, and all of them a base on it, you can claim the sector.
Once you've claimed your first sector you can set rules, one of them disallows trading at the port in the sector for unallied people(if there is one).
That means only you can trade there, meaning maximum profit.

I now secured two Ore-Goods trade routes with my planets
<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners. If you devirginised them yourself, though, that's another story. If they devirginised each other, then, I hope you had that webcam running.

      ah didnt know that

btw, does seting the planet to sell comodities work for you? does the number of good need to be above a certain amount in order to start selling?

Not that i'm aware of...you do need players buying it though, which may be hard with only 20-something players

The more planets you have, the more colonists you can have. Colonists produce resources or credits on planets, they also reproduce. So the more planets you have, the more resources your empire produce each turn. Un-colonized planets are mostly useless, unless you just dump a lot of fighters/energy on them and use them as a landing base when you log out. But while you do that you might as well colonize them. You break even when colonizing after around 1500 turns. So start colonizing early. Don't colonize a single planet too much though, because the colonists are capped (default 100,000,000), and once this cap is reached you don't get any reproduction bonus. Best to colonize a planet to 30 or 40M colonists, then let it reproduce to 100M with a few thousand turns. Hope this helped.

Better question, what's this tech levels for planets thing people keep talking about? I've looked ALL OVER the planet menu, put tons of resources on planets and looked again, can't find anything about upgrading beyond a basic base. What am I missing? The help files are, well, practically nonexistant.

Your planet's tech level is the same as your ship, and I believe that building a base increases all the levels by +1 for that planet.

Ack, so if someone destroys your ship, all your planets become instantly defenseless?

not if you still have fighters and energy, right?

Well, sort of, but won't a planet be unable to use more than 100 fighters with a tech level of 0 to control them?

At any rate, if fighters have no control limitation on planets, your torpedos, beams, etc. will all sit idle, anyway, leaving your planets *nearly* defenseless if not truly so.

How about alliance planets. Avg tech levels of all the members, tech level of the one who made the planet, or what?

Ehm...how many fighters are you thinking about here?

                        Planet fighters

Planetary fighters aren't limited by your computer level. They defend your planet all at once. So if you have enough fighters on a planet, even if your ship is destroyed (rendering your beams/shields much less efficient until you upgrade back), you'll still have a decent force protecting them, if you planned carefully.

how much energy do planet fighters need in a battle?

                            Just reiterating this question.

And anyway, still, I'd rather have beams, torps, *and* billions of fighters defending each planet than just billions of fighters

Fighters don't use any energy while they are stationned on the planet , and they don't even use energy when they are fighting. So a planet with 500,000 fighters and 0 energy can still use these 500,000 fighters for defense. Fighters only cost energy each turn when they are deployed in a sector, set to attack/toll anyone passing by.
