  • Speak now concerning Rule #8

    ...Or hold your peace

Aeturneus put it nicely concerning Rule #8. So I took the privilage to quote him:

aeturneus: "I notice you put a question mark next to item number 8, regarding corporate backstabbing and general corp. rules. I personally am in favour of that rule, because, as it says, this will allow people to team up with people they don't know all that well, and could possibly make the game more enjoyable for them. It works because it is a tournament game... if it was a regular game I might not like this rule, since the game is then more open-ended with time and plenty of lives to learn from mistakes and take risks. In tournament, the penalty to such risk-taking is so high that such risks are best avoided entirely by this rule in order to ensure corping and teaming is an option for everyone."

So there you have it. Are you For or Against Rule #8? Or do you have a different rule for Rule #8? Or do you abstain from having Rule #8 or not?

Now's the chance to speak your mind. Discuss amonst yourselves.

Oh ya, and for the record, I support Rule #8 - for all of the reasons aeturneus gave.

As the confirmed Libertarian of the group, I guess I should speak up now as currently being against Rule #8, and, in principle, although I haven't read through any rules but #8, rules #1-#10 as well.

The game has rules; they are hard coded into the game. Those are the only rules that I think we need.

Hm, though it seems like most games I've looked at got this "no backstabbing" rule in effect.

For one thing it's hard to tell who you're corping with, so if no similar rules are in effect nobody is going to corp with newcomers.

Now granted we probably don't have a whole lot of newcomers here, however it's still nice to know that you don't have to constantly watch your own back.

If we use corps bigger than 1, I think we should have rule 8 (ooh, the great rule 8 debate - we need a :groan: smiley).

With the number of characters that are slated to play, does it make sense to allow corps of greater than size 1? I agree that the rule does make it a nicer place to live in, but, with the number of folks in the game, I think limiting corps to size one (all for one, one for one! is a good thing. Opinions?

If we do go with the size 1 Corporations, are the players going to start with their own planet (non-improved of course)?

At least this way you wouldn't have to worry about spending the credits on a gen. torp. at the very beginning of the game just to find out you spent all that money and time to create an Ice planet! - we will all start out on equal footing with an earth-type planet. Any other planets you wish to create after that is, well, up to you...

Well I have just spent the morning pm'ing a bunch of the old crew from last winter, trying to excite some new interest in tw. I would personally enjoy a game with a few more players than 8...

Markg suggested that he might advertise the game after the rebang, and that could result in more players... remember, it's fall again, and I expect to see a lot of my friends returning to college, and apolyton is going to get a lot busier over the next couple of months. I think it would be a mistake to bang a game right now with 2.5k sectors and no corporations on the assumption that we will only have about 8 players, since there are many people that left for the summer and may well want to join in the fun over the next couple of weeks...

Alright, lets just give it a couple of days and see if we can at least get some of the old guys back. Then, if it still looks like about 8 players, lets change the agreed on settings to 2.5k and 1 player corps. If it looks more like 12-15 players, lets leave them like they are, 4k and 3 or maybe even 2 players per corp.

Basically, it seems like the number of members per corp should be about 10% of the total number of players. If this number is higher than 1, we need rule 8.

The number of sectors should be about 250-300 per player. This leaves some, but not too much, room to hide.

As for starting planets, I don't know if you can give everyone an earth type to start. I think it's randomly generated in a random sector. If so, no one should get a planet to start. It's an unfair advantage if you're the only player to get a good planet at the beginning, especially if it happens to be located in a decent sized bubble when everyone else's is right in the middle of a major trade route. At least you can control your location with a GT.

Like aeturneus said, let's give it a little more time before we rebang. Give the advertising and word of mouth some time to have an effect. We've waited this long , a little longer won't kill us.

I think Marko Polo is coming back, and we probably can get Garth Vader and Shadowstrike. It's likely that we get more people this time.
