i think we should post announcements of the registration policy and if anyone sees someone playing who is not registered they should be directed to the registration thread so that they can sign up.

How necessary is pre-registration since Dan said he would be checking IP's?

I would still say very important, since I have a home PC on one set of IPs, a laptop with dialup (completely different set of IPs), and a work machine (or a lab of machines), with yet another set of IPs. IP monitoring can only catch so much.

The only problem I see with IP monitoring is what if two folks play from the same machine? Would that get them both banned? Me and Daryl used to play like that from work (and from my house when he was over there); I guess that wouldn't work anymore...

I agree burbel, pre-reg. is still important. I may be getting a router for my high-speed home network and this would put a bunch of different computers behind one IP... my brother wants to play, but if we have the same IP it will look like a dupe - though I'm not sure it's possible to mistake the two of us for one person. Im not sure IP monitoring is a good idea in the first place because of this reason.

I think it is better to do things through registration at these forums. Of course, Dan said he couldn't police that. Thoughts?

Since that is the established policy, I think we can inform Dan of players who hasn't pre-registered. Such a person will be given a warning and a link to here to rectify the situation. His character will be suspended until he does so, which means he would have 7 days to register.

Pre-registration is important. What if I use a proxy? That would give me the same IP as at least a dozen other people...

Well it's trivial to get another email address so you and your brother playing from the same IP address would look exactly like one person playing two players.

Well, I think the point that should be made is that there is no real way to tell dupes via email or via IP, the best we can do is just play on the honor system.

Any better ideas, since neither of these will work that well? (Although I think the hassle of getting another email address is more than the hassle of moving to another PC, IMHO).

It's not that trivial to get another e-mail address considering most Web-based mailers aren't allowed here. While it's not foolproof it's better than nothing.

The problem with the honour system is it takes just one person to break it down completely and there are always people who don't mind taking advantage of that.
