This is the lesson I was force fed by MarkG (sorry Mark, couldn't resist) :

      1. Park your ship in FEDERATION SPACE when you end your movement for the day.
      2. Have the Maximum of Fighters (But only up to 100!).
      3. And of course, make sure you have Shields.

(On a side note, I was in unclaimed space and even though I had 30 shields, Mark started that I had zero prior to his attack ... Is there something I should have done to "turn them on/raise shields" prior to quiting for the day? Or could non-human opponents have attacked my ship in such a way as to have destroyed all of my shields but still leave the ship with its full compliment of defensive fighters? - I would appreciate any insight concerning this, so I don't make the same fatal mistake twice )

First hand experience tells me to agree with Wittlich.

The fact is that you had those 30 shields and no, they don't need to activated . Me and MarkG were assuming that our ship had combat computer which shows the amount of shields. Well, our ships (Scout and Constellation) didn't had that. ISS have combat computer for sure, but I don't know about others.

Hmmm... what about the Interdiction Cruiser?

Amusingly, rediculously, however you want to take it, the ISS does *not* have a combat computer. CorpFlag, Missile Frigate, and Battleship are the only ones in a default config, IIRC. This is one thing they really ought to disclose in the ship catalog. (Along with whether a ship can hold a holoscanner or not.)
