(Creative aside) Yes, negotiations and tech trade w/other kingdoms was intended as a function of the scenario. Recommended, actually. Perfectly permissable and reasonable considering the history. The French during this period did arrange an entente between themselves and the Barbary kingdoms, w/the idea that Barbary raiders should then fall on Italian and Spanish coastlines, rather than French. Check the Readme file for the scenario for more, including some strategy suggestions.

HRH Charles calls on all of Christian Europe to put aside minor religious differences and band together to stop the heathens who refuse to recognize the true faith. Already our border cities have fallen to the dogs of Islam. He will crush them, as we have their calvery patrols, but we call on the great powers to resist these devils. <>Turn sent to Spain.

Our ambassador in England has brought us the secret of Gunpowder, which he has got from the English in exchange for Medicine. I may upgrade him, since he has done a great service to us.

The mighty king of France has after negotiations whit the Berbers (that was allowed, right?) started to build a new modern army consisting of Pikemen and Harcebusiers. The modernization of the French army is lead by Berber experts which the Berber ruler decided to exchange whit France.
In exchange the Berbers where given the knowledge of Janisaries (I guess Spain will be mad at me ) and other widespread French knowledge.
France has also begun a large economical buildup by promoting quarters for merchants in far more cities than prevouis.

France is the victim of an atrocity! A regiment of vacationing (read as "vacationing", propaganda you know ) crossbowmen was greated by a Spanish herald, this herald concluded that if France wouldn't pay Spain the sum of 200 gold a state of war would arise between these states. Naturaly France rejected this unfair and foul proposition, the Spanish embassador then concluded that from this day on Spain and France would be at war (was this really spains intention?).
A rearanging of taxes has taken place in France, while the people could be more happy whit the changes, a balance in the French budget has now been created.
Rumours claim that a french army has landed on Corsica, but those rumours are denied by the French king.

Diplomatic relations have boomed and England seems to be seeked out as an ally as the Commmercial States and the Austrians have offered alliances. In exchange for 260 gold, the Austrian Empire has agreed to the trade of Polearms and Turkey and Britain have signed a peace treaty.

England then contacted Spain and they demanded we declare war on France to which Britain refused and so they later demanded the secret of Polearms. Due to our refusal, Spain has declared war on the Kingdom of Britain! Britain then with the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" policy Britain quickly contacted France and, after the payment of 150 gold and the secret of navigation an alliance was secured.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth has addressed the nation and called upon the people of Britain to rally forth in the defense of the Kingdom and military spending has been greatly increased supported by an incipient growth of mining industries and an improvement in road networks to aid communications and the movement of troops within the isles.

In this year, mounted British troops landed near the coast of Antwerp and seized a Spanish Caravan after a brief skirmish.

The Venetian Dogs have attacked the Turkish city of Aydin on the coast of Asia Minor, but local Janizzary contingents have manned the walls of the town and repulsed the assault. The Porte suspects that the craven Frankish pig-dogs who now occupy Rhodes have sponsored this harassing raid.

                    They will pay.

Probing attacks in northern Hungary have revealed the weakness of the decadent Franks of the upper Danube. The armies of the Sultan are even now organizing for the march on Vienna.

The Sublime Porte has declared the Aegean Sea mare nostrum. The Italian pirates must vacate these isles or be driven out by Turkish naval forces.

Thanks, Fiera. The period is full of potential, and if one is a competent Civ2 player, it just breezes by. Pikes, Muskets, Culverins, and Ships-of-the-Line are interesting weapons and in the default game they are hardly used; everyone is much more interested in racing to the 20th century units. I created this scenario with the hope that, some time, someone would want to try it on MP. I wish that the playtesting process could have occurred with a slew of avid players. It would certainly have improved the scenario. With the gracious assistance of Henrik and his excellent improvements to the events file, I am even now preparing a version 2.0 which will include some of the more problematic aspects of the period, including the English Civil War, Gustavus Adolphus military adventure into northern Germany, and the various campaigns of the Polish monarchs. If it's more than just the period of the scenario that you like, if the game mechanics and size is what you find attractive, then take a look at one of my other scenarios, Mediterranean Dark Age or American Empire. I think I can say that extensively reworked tech trees are my forte, and I enjoy constructing these immensely. Too many scenario designers go straight to the pertinent military technologies and so leave out a lot. Ideology and philosophy have historically played a huge part in the determination of just who fielded what weapons in conflict. There are times when I actually feel like there are not enough tech slots to really do justice to a period.

Who's crowing? I'm simply "in character." Ever seen an actual communique from the Sublime Porte from the 16th or 17th century? I cannot hold a candle to the real thing. For some nifty visuals of Turkish period splendor, see the cool scenery from the flick, "Baron Munchausen." There is some great stuff in that movie; somebody did their homework.
