  • Carolus Gustavus Reagis scenario playtest

Since I don't want to threadjack Jesús 30 years war thread I have created this thread here for those who whish to playtest my scenario.
The scenario can be downloaded from here: http://w1.461.telia.com/~u46115811/ , since there is no readme included yet I do recomend that you read this text:
I will repost the original mail that I sent to Shaka, which was what set off this discussion:
    quote:

Thanks! It is about the Swedish-Polish war of 1655
There are lots of special rules and stuff (forests for example will
detract from your defence bonus). Any european nation is playable there are:
Habsburgs (I think you know who these guys are )
    French (these too)
Swedish (not that hard to figure out either)
Danish (also includes the dutch, I would like a better name for this civ
but I havent come up whit one yet)
Protestants (England, Transylvania, a few german cities and Brandenburg)
Polish (these are the Polish Lituan comonwealth)
    Russians (guess who these are)
You will notice that the scenario intro text is really big, it will be
smaller when I write the readme but untill then it is needed.
The situation when the scenario starts is this:
The newly crowned Swedish king is an almost absulte monarch, he never
felt appriciated untill he got assigned to the army during the late
stages of the thirty years war and he really likes the life in the
field, he is also a great gambler and enyojs taking risks.
The Polish Lituan comonwealth is under attack by the Russians and is
also fighting a civil war in Ukraine. They are very divided and the king
is constantly squabling whit his nobility. The polish army consists
mostly of Hussars (polish knights) and there is almost no infantry or
    modern fortifications...
Sweden has just finnished of the 30 years war and has a large army that
they need to dispose off, that army is also a very experienced and
modern one, almost the opposite from the polish.
An old Swedish dream has allways been "Dominium Maris Baltici" the total
domination of the baltics. Danzig is the only major port and rivermouth
that isn't Swedish, Sweden ses its chanse and jumps at it.
A swedish army lead by the king himself enters the comonwealth trying to
grab hold of the entire Polish part of the baltic coast. But when they
see how unmodern the Polish army is Karl X Gustav of Sweden (the king)
    makes a bold move:
He will march towards Warzaw not Danzig...
The Russians are lead by Tzar Aleksej, Russia used to be cought in civil
strife but it is now united. While the Russians where fighting
internally both the Polish and the Swedish tried to grab as much as
possible of Russia and succeded. Russias goal is to take back what was
lost during these years. Russia is however more modernized than Poland
and has a small but well equipped army...
The Danes are constantly trying to make life a hard time for the Swedes,
they haven't quite accepted that Sweden is now the dominating Power in
the baltics, and they still have controll over Öresund...
The Dutch want balance in the baltics, if the Swedish do get Danzig it
isn't going to benefit the dutch trade...
They make a mutual defence pact whit Denmark...
Frederik Wilhelm of Brandenburg is quitly supporting Karl X Gustav in
his war against the comonwealth and allows Swedish troops to use
Brandenburg soil to enter the Polish-Lituan comonwealth.
Racoczy of Transylvania is totaly convinced that the Swedish king is a
saint that will save all protestants from the wretched catholics...
The only thing that hinders him from entering the war is his wife and
his mother in law, they both think that the Sultan wouldn't look kindly
of him attacking Poland (Transylvania is an Ottoman vassal but still a
    protestant nation)
England is supporting everyone who bothers the Dutch...
Cromwell is quitly supporting the Swedes to.
The French are in thier golden age under Le Rio Solleille and
French-Swedish Relations have allways been good...
The Spanish are currently fighting the French in what is a leftover from
    the thirty years war.
The Empire is quiete but is quitly supportive to Poland...

That is the situation when the game starts (I hope you could read it all
    )
There are seasons incorporated in the scenario and they are working
    quite well I think.
I have gotten reports about some of the sounds being non-functional,
please tell me if you have any problems.
All nations are running a deceit, this is becouse they are deep in debt
after the 30 years war. Sell some churches if you need to.
All nations get extra income from collonies/loans from time to time so
    they will survive.
In the winter it is possible to use the frozen sea in Öresund to attack
the danish capital and the defending superfortress "Fredriksodde" is a
lot weaker in the winter too.
Please tell me what you think

    There you are
I hope you find it fun and please report any bug/inaccuracy/problem or things that you find odd in general.
Also please report what you think about it, since playability is the most important thing for a scenaroi (after historical accuracy which is something that I think there is loads of in this scenario, there is allways room for improvement though, while I know a lot about the situation in Scandinavia and Poland during this time, my knowladge of France and Spain is more vague any help is appreciated).

Edit: changed data about where to download the scenario and removed plea for help whit the sounds (since it is now fixed).

Thanks to Waku the sounds are now functioning.
I also updated the .bat files, I have no way of checking if they function or not (sine I use a mac) but editing them as text files is pretty easy and all I needed to do was to add a line that said the same thing as the other lines (but whit new file names ofcourse).
The summer.bat and winter.bat will now function as intended (I think ).

The scenario is primarily for the swedish but all nations except for the Poles are playable, you will have more opertunities and less help (events are rather centered around the polish/swedish(and possibly Swedish/Danish conflict)) if you play as the other nations though (Russia is fun if you like having a large army and few cities).
I just realized that I forgot to update the unit graphic files in the zip, I am amending this right now (I only updated the rules last time, when there was changes to the graphics as well )
Most graphics (including the modern fortress) was made by Arne Shmied especially for this scenario, something I am really thankfull for.
I would also like to add that although this scenario may seem to evolve around a Polish-Swedish war (since that's the way it starts) it can really end in almost any way(In one game I marched through Poland and continued towards the HRE and if you check how the reall war ended(possibly by searching the net) you might be suprised).

Edit: I had written Arnes name wrong
Edit2: I have fixed the 1655.zip it is now updated whit the latest graphics.

I think that advaned fortresses should be available to be built, maybe the weakers ones, but not the advanced ones

I think it should, the modern fortress represents the new type of fortifications that many started to use during the 30 years war, many did. But not the polish.
When the scenario starts no nation whit self respect would build a fortress of the old medeival kind.
Although they are expensive (and even more expensive if you play the polish or the Russians) they are also very effective.
A mortar or two will easily bring down even the best of fortresses though.
Seige warfare was thriving during this period, whit the exception of Poland all nations had built lots of these fortifications.
It is partly becouse of this that Sweden attacks Poland in the begining of the scenario.
Thanks for the comment though, keep them comming

But I have a big problem: I can´t dowload the scenario. Is it a bug of your site?
Have you made big changes since my last playtesting?

I have sent a mail to the owner of the ftp server.

                      well,

I change the rules during my playtest game and advanced fortres are not available,

                      comments:
-I really like the idea of canging seasons, I think that ships should move at least one square per turn
-I´m having a lot of fun and in my opinion this and the new 30yw are the best out there about these time period,
the fast attack that I launch on polish cities was really fun and the Russian are giving my a headache...
-the scenario has everything that I like, sea battles, land battles, no planes and I need to fight in four or five different fronts (I declared war on Denmark to make things more interesting )
-the problem about the fortresses is that it is not going to be hard to find a city with maybe four or five of them, (I don´t know how expensive are them), that could be a solution, making them really expensive
-what is our goal? to conquer Moscow or as many objective as possible, I would like the first one
-Hussarias and the special Russian units should be cheaper, to make things harder, in just twelve turns there is no more Polish resistance

I´m having a lot of fun

                      great scenario

hehe that is what you think
I forsee you having serious troubles whit the poles later on...
Sweden did manage to "conquer" all of Poland rather quickly, but they couldn't hold it...

                        quote:

I have made modern fortresses really expensive as it is, and as I said warfare was very seige centered when there was fortifications, please note that while they are expensive they are buildable, but the comp wont build many (and neither will you if you arent doind extremly well).
Some cities starts out whit more modern fortresses than one...
Mainly the Italian cities and those at the French-Spanish border...

The old fashioned fortresses could be built in masses but they are easy to kill of, all you need is a mortar or a medium artillery, the only though city whit old fortresses is Cracow in Poland, it has old fortresses but is still rather hard to take (by design).

Also note that building forts (modern or old) is the only way to fortify a city, the improvement "maintained defences" replaces city walls but also costs a lot of gold in upkeep. This is to represent the great costs of mainting defeences of this time, most cities have fortresses, not all have maintained defences...

                        quote:

                        great scenario
