  • Vacation in Spain - need advice

I was never in Spain before, I know its a shame , but I plan to travel to Spain next year (or perhaps this year, if the reconstruction of my home is finished sooner). What should I visit?

Of course I can look into the travel agencies (and I´ll do that), but what are things I should see, I mean things that are not listed in the catalogues, things that "normal" tourists don´t see, despite they are great? I´m mainly interested in ancient and medieval history, perhaps I can learn something more about the reconquista...I´m not the man who lays three weeks on an overcrowded beach, I love to travel around and see a lot of different places. And I love mountains, because here in my hometown aren´t any... Some ideas?

    Hallo, Bernd!

I've got great news for you. If you love medieval history, Spain has thousands of delights to see. In fact, there are millions of interesting things that the normal tourists don't normally see (the average German tourist comes here just looking for sun).

Fist of all, I'd never leave Spain without visitting Granada. Amnd as you will probably want to know Granada and the Alhambra, you can't leave aside neither Sevilla nor Córdoba, which aren't very far. Then, if you want to see castles and castles, you'll have plenty of them in Castilla (Castile, that name meaning exactly "Castles"). One of those that I'm sure you'll love is the Alcázar of Segovia. Segovia is not far from Madrid, which you'll probably want to pay a visit to too. Also, you have to see the most amazing medieval city walls in the world: those of Ávila, very near Madrid too. Cuenca, not far from Madrid either, it's another wonder of the world, not to be missed.

There are lots of more beatiful places to see, I'll just let them for the other Spanish posters.

Yes, unfortunately, but I can´t understand these people. If I´m in a great country, I´ll always want to learn more about it...
However, thanks for the ideas, can´t await the next

Very nice, Waku I should rather make the journey this year than next.
BTW, these city walls (Avila) look suspiciously similar to the city walls icon of the hires modpack, or am I wrong?

Very good idea Bernd!!!! I hope you´ll have a good time when tou came!!!!
I think that South East of Spain are very unkowned and beautiful, I think that there is everything you want to see.
If you want to see monuments you can visit the Alhambra in Granada and its historical center, the Alcazaba of Almeria (the biggest muslim militar fortress in Europe) that is very well preserved, the castle of Velez (Almeria), the Castle of Lorca (Murcia) and other small castles, fortresses and towers.
If you like walking or horseback riding in the mountain you have a lot of small lost towns in Alpujarras of Almeria and Granada, the marquesado of Velez (Almeria), the plains of Calahorra(a wonderfull catle), Guadix or Baza(Granada) and Filabres or Cabrera mountains (Almeria). Forest, mountains and good food (and wine ).
If you like virgin beaches, marine villages, old mines, steeps and lost creeks (it is true no tourists or horrible tall apartaments) you can go to Cape of Gata, if you like driving the road of the East coast of Almeria is wonderful.
And of course you can visit the unique desert of Europe in Tabernas (Almeria). You can do moto-cross in dry watercourses.
and if you go in winter you can snowboarding and skiing in Sierra Nevada.
ahhhh!!!! Don´t forget going round the bars and eating snacks.

Do somebody know that i am from Almeria?????

As I had expected, one journey doesn´t seem enough

In the next time I´ll plan a good route to see some of the most interesting places. At the end I´ll relax some days somewhere at the ocean.

BTW, what´s the Spanish Pride modpack, is it already finished? On your site, JayBee?

Yes, it's on my site. The very first scenario I designed, well before the advent of FW. It's a "modpackish" scenario.

If you mean Canary Islands, you won't notice you're abroad. They are full of germans (no need to take spanish lessons )

This sounds more like a warning to me... I have enough Germans friends here, so for the vacations I´d like to meet some others

Yes, I also thought the same. I actually thought to incorporate it to the Spanish Pride modpack. All the wow pictures in there are the real thing, and the one in HiRes looked so much better.

Yes, there are tons of things to see in Spain. Spain ranks first of the world in number of places included in the World Heritage List.

Let me plug in for Valladolid, a city which I did not know before but now I am really impressed with. The castle at Medina del Campo above is quite close to Valladolid. In this city the walls and roads literally speak to you as you walk along. I always get the impression that this city stopped in the XV-XVI centuries ans still remains there. Valladolid was the capital of Castile when Spain did not yet exist and that shows in almost every corner.

Valladolid is in addition very close to Madrid, a city underrated by many tourists but still with a million and one places to discover. This was, do not forget, the most important place of the world in the XVI-XVII century. It also hosts the best soccer team ever

End of history lessson for today.
