BTW, another question regarding the first post. Is that an actual warning that we'll more or less have to take to the islands in order to survive the onslaught and strike back at some point?

In that spirit, when Fathan is'under siege' what kind of army is it besieging me? After all, my diplomacy actions depend on the desperation of the situation.

You may or may not be able to save your mainland city, but it might behoove you to expand outwards so as to have a backup and another place to draw soldiers from.

Sul's army is the largest on the mainland (4000 strong), but the troops are not especially well trained or equipped. They have deployed themselves in an arc around the western half of your city, currently far enough out to avoid being seen directly from the city, and are expanding their lines around the city, attempting to entirely surround you.

The game is pretty open ended at this point. Ultimately we reserve the right ot invoke the Might of the Mods whenever we see fit. If you play your country correctly, then yes you will likely end up on the islands as that is the only other place to go (unless you're up for some exploring).

(okay, starting up with some writing)

Kerag looked furiously at the map, as the Heads of several families were silent around him. More particularly, he gazed at Sul, as if he could will the city to burn to cinders and ash under his gaze.

Sul, the city the Fathan had fancied as their second conquest after Fatha itself. The city they had waged many a bloody battle over.

They had killed more than they had died, but they had lost more than they had won. There always seemed to be more people willing to fight for Djangawul and a full stomach. They were barely trained, and badly equipped, but the Mainyu empire seemed to have limitless resources, and every battlefield was farther from their city.

And now they were here. Or so close that they might as well be here. They might defeat this army, but it would cost them, and another amy would come, and another. They'd drown.

Drowning... the thought alone made him scowl deeper.

"As things are, we will lose this war." He said sharply.

Ilaf folded his arms. "We have iron, blood, flesh and fire. We'll show those farmers with spears a few things about what it means to be a true warrior!"

Kerag had expected that remark, but it didn't make it any more helpful. Ilaf was always a straightforward man. Which was admirable on many occasions but now... "If our stand would ignite the world to burn, Ilaf, that show might have value. But it won't!" He gazed around the table. "We will kill hunderds of them, thousands, but then we will die, and none will be ignited by our flame. Not even our killers, who will return to farming." That caused a growl of discontent among the others. Being killed by a farmer was a shameful thing.

"Are you afraid of dying, Warleader Kerag?" said Lucat, who had been a rival of him since youth.

Kerag caught his stare and moved closer, keeping it up until he stared him down. "Say that again, Lucat, and you and I are going to step into the pit." He raised himself to full height again. "I will die, and I will die roaring and bleeding as befits a Fathan, but I will do so with purpose! We are the brightest flames, our hearts are as red-hot steel, warriors befitting to spark and fight the final conflageration as the Great Pyre burns its last. But THIS, this is not it. This is not where we are to end! If our flame gets snuffed here, this world will grow cold, left to rot and bleach like an uncremated corpse."

"What do you say we do then?" asked Girax, grim faced, quiet and intelligent.

"When a flood threathens your fire, you don't try to boil away the flood. You take some branches, and make sure the fire survives. We must spread, away from these Mainyu. Take some of the Ash-men here to perform the building and build another city." He pointed at the map. "Here, at the far western point, where there is wood to cut."

Girax frowned. "I'd go north. If we are to spread, we should not get ourselves into such a corner."

Kerag tensed. The next step would not be easy. "It won't be a corner, it will be a starting point. We shall spread further west. Over the sea. We'll build ships and claim isles."

Mouths fell open as the Warleader said that. "Over the sea? Ships? We'll travel on wood and water?" The number of Fathan that had even used riverboats could be counted on one hand. Across the sea...

"Yes we will!" Kerag said. "Yes, it is fearful! But did not allof you assure me of your courage just now? Lucat, did you not doubt my courage just now? I say you this is what is needed! And if it looks like fleeing then I care not! It is the glory of the fire as a whole that matters, not the pride of the individual flicker of flame. This is what is needed! Do I have all of you behind me?" He asked.

The Family heads cried in agreement, though a few still looked pale and disturbed at the possible change in life soon.

Ilaf spoke upagain though, a scowl on his face. "And this city, we gave it the name of our people? Do we... give it up? Or give it to the flames?"

Kerag sat down again. "No... no we don't. We stand and fight. If not to obtain victory, then to buy us time forn the fire to spread. Perhaps we'll hold long enough for other cities to flicker to life and add their heat to this one, and Sol will yet burn, but sometimes the Firstborn child is not to live to succeed. We shall see what happens. It depends on our courage and strength" He looked around. "My fellow warriors, I have tasks before me, as do you. Let us work."

(Now, before I start posting Diplomacy, I presume I receive 300 units of timber for 300 gold from the Teutons right?)

Yes; you currently harvest 200 units of lumber each turn and recieve 300 units from Teutoburg, for a total of 500.

Recited to an Ash-Man scribe by Warleader Kerag, and given to 'The Warleader of the Teutons'

Kerag, branded son of Gadon, Warleader of the Fathan, First flame among the great inferno that are the Fathan greets the noble leader of the proud and defiant Teutons and the Ruler of the woods.

As you read this message, it is likely that the flames of war burn around the city of Fatha. They burn hot, but do not burn clean, and we do not wish to see our fire going out yet.

And so we seek to spread our spark, to escape the smothering death-grip of the Mainyu monster, even if we must risk giving upparts of ourselves.

I mean to see part of my people over the salt waters, to find places to start new cities and keep the fire hot. But to do that we will need many things. We need a harbour, a city, the knowledge to build and use the constructions that move on water called ships, and of course, the people to fill the city and spawn more cities.

And so I come to you, as two warriors on a battlefield might aid one another. Mainyu's grip is ever spreading and tightening. Do you doubt that they will turn their eyes on your forests as well? Even your mighty walls would end up washed away under the seas of farmer armies sent against you.

So here is what I propose. We shall send some of our sons and daughters with a score of ash-men to construct a city on the far end of the peninsula, with woods close enough to build ships. What we shall need is time. If you stand with us to release Mainyu's strangling hold, I swear to you, our flames will scour those who would try to breach your walls. And once the city is complete, and ships are built, we would allow you to spread your seeds as we spread our sparks.

May your heart burn till its last beat, and may your iron break before it rusts.

                    Warleader Keran, son of Gadon.

Kerag, branded son of Gadon, Warleader of the Fathan, First flame among the great inferno that are the Fathan greets the leader of far Jahnu, and the master of its wooden horses of the salt waters.

It is my burning hope that this letter reaches you in good state. The first time my people met the sea, they considered they had found the end of the world. When they heard some men had found ways to ride the waves, we first thought it legend, then insanity. When we heard of your city on its isle, some of my bravest warriors shuddered at the thought.

And yet now I find that we must face this fear and cross the posion water, and risk drowning in sea water so we do not drown in Mainyu.

We must, but know not how. We hear stories of wood carrying men, of wind trapped in cloth. Nor my brave warriors, not the Ash-men of Fatha know how to work this thing. Therefor we would ask you send us someone to learn us to tame the wild waves and bridle the wind.

For these secrets, I offer 200 golden pieces and the gratitude of the Fathan Flames, Our ships will sail towards the place where the suns go out, rather than where they are born, so you should not fear to suffer our fire for quite some time. Rather, you should consider Mainyu's eternal hunger for new slaves.

May your heart burn till its last beat, and may your iron break before it rusts.

Are you suggesting an alliance and cooperation in sawing the seeds of civilization to the Western isles? If so, the Teutons accept. We hear the stories about the hooved creatures fighting the people of the steppes, and we hope to hinder their advance by helping those who are attacked.

If we are to work together in colonizing the isands, we are to agree on our spheres of influence. My suggestion would be that the Fathan shall rule the waves south of the westernmost point of our continent, while we would settle north of it.

What do you think, bright spark in the night?

[b] Warleader Keran, son of Gadon to Theoderich of the Teutons [b]

We draw lines in the sea as we do on land now? Very well, your people can consume the bounty north of the city, we shall spread south.

We expect the Mainyus here any day now. We're not sure of their full strength, but expect that this lot will fall under our iron blades. Still, each of our branded warriors is worth two dozen of their armed men of clay and ash, but their cowardly leaders throw them at us in such numbers that even our might alone is failing, and each warrior is irreplacable.

But if you remove this dagger at our heart, I assure you, the Fathan armies will march across the night and stand beside anyone with the courage to make a stand against them

Back to the colonization, we have contacted someone of far away Jahnu, asking if they will sell us knowledge and craftsman to make these ships.

I hope that when the time comes to build the ships we may count on some of the Teuton wood?

One Population Unit, together with 500 of my army (if possible to divide differently, I'd like to leave the archers in the city, and send all the light and medium cavalry with them)
