Well, we've had our first NMR of the game and Takeda has paid a heavy price - with the total annihilation of the clan, he becomes the first casualty. Anyone notice a thinly-veiled moral to the story?

    THOUGHT FOR THE PHASE:
"When on the battlefield, if you try not to let others take the lead and have the sole intention of breaking into the enemy lines, then you will manifest martial valour. This fact has been passed down by the elders. Furthermore, if you are slain in battle, you should be resolved to have your corpse facing the enemy."
-----Tsunetomo, Yamamoto "Hagakure, Book of the Samurai"

    GM COMMENTS:
A couple of retreats due: Oda A-Yamashiro can retreat to ise, Yamato or OTB (done on map, but please confirm or change). Takeda retreats to Hida, but is EOG anyway so will remove in winter phase.

    SC COUNT AND BUILDS/DISBANDS:
    Shimazu: 7 SCs, 1 build
    Uesugi: 7 SCs, 2 builds
    Hojo: 7 SCs, 1 build
    Chosokabe: 5 SCs, 1 build
    Oda: 5 SCs, no change
    Asakura: 3 SCs, 1 disband
    Mori: 2 SCs, 1 disband
Takeda: 0 SCs, 1 disband, EOG

Winter deadline will be Sunday 12 August at 1159 GMT.

    POWER RANKINGS:
    1) Shimazu - Although Uesugi and Hojo have both caught up in terms of SCs, Shimazu still has the best opportunities for expansion before getting bogged down in the central wars. The conquest of Mori continues unabated and the other neighbours are all weaker and caught up in wars in the centre. The future is very bright indeed.

    2) Hojo - Not much between Hojo and Uesugi, but Hojo is perhaps in a better strategic position with fleets poised for continued expansion. With the defeat of Takeda, further expansion will necessitate war with Oda or ally Uesugi. If the Uesugi alliance holds, Hojo's prospects are very good.

    3) Uesugi - Similar story with Uesugi, less nearby SCs to plunder, but he has a strong, broad front to push west and south. Again, expansion forces him to either attack Oda, Asakura or Hojo. He will be a major player in the central wars.

    4) Chosokabe - Finally making progress against Asakura, and with a diminished threat from Mori, Chosokabe can build once again. There is limited room for expansion without armies on the mainland, but an alliance with Oda seems to be working for now. The main danger lies to the west, where a growing Shimazu could soon be looking for new targets.

    5) Oda - So far, Oda has had the best of the central wars, but now faces an uncertain future. With Asakura putting up a brave resistance, Oda must now deal with the possibility of a Hojo/Uesugi advance - with nowhere else to go, Oda is unfortunately the logical target. It all depends on diplomacy.

    6) Asakura - A brave fight has been put up against Oda and Chosokabe, but major ground has been lost. An escape route may depend on more distant powers attacking his enemies - Shimazu and Hojo/Uesugi mainly. If this fails to happen, the end could be in sight for Asakura.

    7) Mori - Mori is in big trouble, fleeing before the forces of Shimazu who is getting stronger all the time. There is no obvious way out of the situation and it will take some major dipping to survive.

    8) Takeda - An NMR buried him, but he was sinking fast anyway under the combined attack of Hojo and Uesugi. What more can I say, he dead!!! Thankyou for playing, I hope you enjoyed it, however short.
