    General Info

As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed the country in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th Century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring eastern productivity and wages up to western standards. In January 2002, Germany and 11 other EU countries introduced a common European currency, the euro.

To Germany: Do you wish to sign a defensive military alliance? If one nation is attacked, the other will come to it's aid.

Please reply in the Britain thread

              War With the Netherlands

Today the German Bundestag voted for a declaration of war against the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The declaration of war was officially signed by Chan. Schroeder, making it official that we are at war with the Dutch.

The declaration of war was made in response to several border raids made over the last 3 months by Dutch troops. As he signed the bill, the Chancellor told the press, "We gave them an ultimatum last month giving them enough time to cease these raids and withdraw large quantities of troops stationed on the border. As they have refused to do so, it is our duty to inflict the consequences."

Many Germans are unwilling to see their soldiers sent across the border to be killed in fighting with the Dutch, but most are hopeful that the conflict will be over before Christmas.

When asked about his strategy in the Netherlands campaign, Gen. Albrecht Palpenheim, commander-in-chief of the German Army, remarked, "It's all quite simple. A pre-dawn artillery bombardment in key defensive points, then a swift flanking movement and a direct push to Amsterdam." He was prevented from elaborating further by security protocols.

The popularity of this action in the international community is debatable. While many overseas nations are condoning this act of force, other nations, primarily European ones, see this as a threat.

"When we compare this act of war to those by Greece in the Balkans and Italy in the Vatican and Monaco, it becomes clear that Europe is once again ablaze," remarked one member of the Bundestag who voted against the war.
