  • cCYONES: civman's "Create Your Own" NES

Now that it seems that we are down to 3 NESs, I have decided to start a new one.

The year is 1895, as is the technology, approximately (~mid-late industrial in civ3 terms). 1 day=1 year.

EDIT: All nations have been created. The following is a summary of recent history:
    1. Russian Civil War: Russia splits into Czarist Russia and Free Russian States. Sweden helps FRS, gains some territory.
    2. Great War: Germany attacks France. Spain, Mediterannean League, and Serbia ally with France; Sweden, Belgium, Moorish rebels, and Italy side with Germany. Italy drops out of war because of a revolution but gains land in Dalmatia and the islands of Sicily and Malta. France and Spain merge, and eventually surrender. France loses most of colonial empire and European empire, but the victors lose most of the African colonies they won to the Drakans. In exchange for switching sides at the edn of the war, the Mediterranean League gets the Baleares.

      Manifest Destiny gone awry.

The United States made extreme gains during the war of 1812. The invasion of Canada became successful after Jackson told them that a three pronged attack wouldn't work as well as a massive assault. This advice was heeded, and the Americans took most of Canada.

To the south, similar happenings took place during the Mexican American war. The Texans, hungry for vengeance, moved deep into the mexican Isthmus, and completely overran the baja penninsula.

The United States was unable to purchase Alaska, however; russians were using it as a retreat from the cold siberian winters.

The U.S. also established bases in Eastern China at the request of the Chinese government, to prevent imperialist nations from exploiting China.

here's the map (lol hopefully I'm doing this right)

History: After an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Czar Alexander II in 1866, the Czar began to weaken or repeal many of the reforms he had been enacting that had been bringing Russia closer to freedom and widespread prosperity. Discontent grew quickly, both in the working classes and in the upper classes and less powerful aristocrats. When Alexander II was successfully assassinated in 1870, the country plunged into turmoil and violence. Military leaders tried to secure power for themselves while the new Czar Alexander III attempted to retain his throne. Meanwhile, some anarchist and socialist groups used violence to try to achieve their goals. But there were more moderate forces. In the south of European Russia as well as in the Asian Russia, those favoring a western-style country gained power of the huge landscape but fairly sparse population. As the heartland of Russia dripped blood and was caught in fierce turmoil, the westernists constructed a country of their own. However, amid the struggle, Asian powers grabbed some of the former Russian frontier land. When Czar Alexander III finally regained power over the West of Russia again in 1872, he attempted an invasion of the remaining areas. For two years the forces of the Czar and the republicans fought each other. Finally, when the Czar’s lack of advance and conditions in Europe forced the Czar to stop fighting, the Czar’s Russia and the newly proclaimed Free Russian States began a wary truce. Formal peace establishing the borders was signed in 1876, the same year a formal government of Federated Republics was put in place. At first the federal government retained most of the control over most internal affairs, and with some strategic development of resources, the country has been steadily advancing in the last twenty years. Now, with the federal government having loosened control, internal situations have progressed fairly smoothly. Significant infrastructure has been put in place and it is still steadily expanding. Overall wealth has greatly increased, although there is still a large class of poor near-peasants. However, an expanding job market, improving education standards, and increased trade are opening up avenues for the underclasses. Tensions still run fairly high with the Czar’s Russia, which recently passed to the rule of Nicholas II. Most of the lands in Asia that were seized have been recovered through negotiation and peaceful purchases. Relations with neighboring Asian countries are cautious but fairly friendly. The FRS has been moving more on to the world stage with increased trade and diplomatic presence, though there are currently still no strong ties to other nations. But recent events have given the new growing country pause and concern. The Franco-Prussian war sent ripples into development which were difficult to surpass, and very recent bad harvest have caused problems both in the FRS and in the Czar’s Russia, somewhat destabilizing the region. It is uncertain whether the last Czar’s oppressive tendencies will continue (including brutal means of keeping civilians from fleeing into the FRS, still a problem as many peasants on the Czar’s side of the border want to go to or be incorporated into the comparatively prosperous FRS), and also uncertain what new world developments will happen. For the time being, the FRS can only keep on its path and be watchful.

                  Elitist Republic
                  History:

The Draka Novels by S.M, Sterling chronicle the History of the Dominion fairly well, but this is another History, seperate from that one. We were ddesigned to be the Anti-Americaby Mr. Sterling, and here is how he envisioned us, tailored to the times by myself.

Originally a backwater Dutch Colony in South Africa the ill tended Draka built themselves upon slavery. Sweeping northwards, filled with hatred for the natives of Africa, the Draka built an Empire. Slavery fell in other places, and only lately in America. Many refugees from the Confederacy have found themselves in the Dominion, helping it grow. The nation is fascist in all respects, though that word has yet to be uttered by anyone. The few natives of Africa who survive live in fear and slavery.

The Draka are a representative of the Evils that Western Europe unleashed with it's Pandora's box. The Evil of the tree that Adam ate of. Even as the Europeans crusade to reform themselves the Draka will continue to live in the evil. The Nation is Power Unrefined, the only way for them to acheive might is to have no scruples, and they have none. Draka power is unchecked by neighbors, most of whom fear themselves to be next on the list of Genocide. The Draka are brutally effective warriors.

The Dominion of Draka, Power, for it's own sake. The Dominion of Draka, the last words you will likely hear on a battlefeild.

                    Scandinavian Empire/Sweeden (red)

                    Navy: Medium

                    Tech: Mid-Late Industrial Era
                    Government: Constitutional Monarchy

                    History:
In 1397, Sweeden, Denmark, and Norway were united in the Kalmar Union. In Real Life, the Kalmar Union broke up in the early 1500's, but in this NES, it remained united. The Union had great power, and was a major player in European affairs and diplomacy. It was a colonial nation, and established colonies in Iceland, Greenland, the Caribbean, and later in New Zealand. In the 1700's the Empire took peaceful government reforms moving from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.

More recently, in the early 1800's, the Empire followed the footsteps of Britain in industrializing, and continues to remain equal in technology with the most advanced nations in the world. During the Russian Civil War in the 1870's, the Scandinavian Empire sided with the rebels and the Free Russian States, and captured a small part of Northwestern Russia. During the Great War, the Scandinavian Empire sided with Germany, and captured some of the Franco-Spanish colonies in the southern part of South America, as well as a small French colony in Africa.

There is a statue in Cape Town.

A Centurion, of Roman dress, though that isn't specified anywhere upon the statue or by the creator, whose name was poorly remembered by the annals of History. Few people of the Dominion could repeat it, not that it was so hard to pronounce, simply that it is, and will be forever, unimportant.

The soldier, a Centurion if he is indeed Roman, holds a sword in one hand, streatched high to the heavens, a sheild poised in his other hand. The Image is one to burn itself eternally into your mind, but the image is not so well known as the quote.

Inscribed at the base in letters as tall as a man.

"Give us your poor. Give us your angry, Give us the huddled masses and we shall bind them together against you."

Many a heart had leapt at those words, a frightened foreigner, a newly arrived citizen, a member of an aristrocratic family line weeping with pride of his motherland. His true motherland. Not the French, the Spanish the Italians, any nation that turned him out, left him without privelege. But rather that nation which perserved him, where he ran his plantation, where he commanded legions.

Centurion Otto von Bartz looked upon the statue, or rather a faded postcard, a reflection of the copper glory. He had been a lord in Germany once, he had once held his own peice of that once shattered nation. He had been expelled as the sleeping giant awoke and took inventory. The wooden door of the Barracks swung lazily in the Jungle breeze.

America had been his family's new home. He had cut his brother away when he heard news that he fought in the Iron Brigade during the Civil War. they had once taken a vow to perserve the dying practice of slavery. The elder child had not seen fit to honor this, and when Otto finally pulled the family's estate from the Fatherland, whose bastard children paid him no respect anymore, he had seen fit to keep it all, to build a plantation and to assist Confederate Refugees as they fled from the nation whose crusade against the nobles of the south had won them Unity.

Centurion now. Otto had long been an officer in the Army of Westphalia, though the North German confederaction had left the existance of no such state. The Draka penchant for the classical, perhaps fantasies of being ressurected Emperors of long sleeping Rome had long fasinated Otto, it hadn't taken him long to acheive mastery of the new ranks and the strategies implied by the different amounts of Arms under each commander. He had won the respect of the Draka, they had rewarded him, as they reward all their faithful. His brother had likely received nothing more than an army pension for risking his life for an ill placed hope. Slavery would triumph.

In the Darkness of Africa the Legions were rising. In the Shadow of the Congo an Empire prepared to conqure.

The Masses, the Angry, the poor and the wealthy, were bound together. Now all that remained was the strike.

                          Ottoman Republic

After Jalabad came to power in 1850, sweeping changes came to the once old and sickly empire. He allied with the european like Spanish and French and modernized the army. He then fought old enimes like Austria, and captured much of their old empire. Most say, though, he greatest achievement was his famous " Aboloshment of an Empire, establishment of a republic" speech. In that speech, he passed great freedoms almost identical of that of the Bill of Rights in he U.S. He declared all citizens equal, abolished slavery (which already was very minimal their), and institued a system of checks and balances. Then, all the rebellions stopped. People cheered in the streets. Morale was boosted above the roof!
The year is now 1895. Their hero has recently died of a heart attck. As people mourned in the streets, wearing black and dropping millions upon millions of flowers, I, Abdullah Ali, must make up for the loss of a national hero. I think I'm ready.

SKILORD, is it OK if I say after the Franco-Prussian War Drakia has been gobbling up German and Belgian colonies? So some of the northernmost expansion occurred quite recently?

Tomorrow afternoon I think we will start.

                              Federated Germany

A massive Socialist upheaval in 1884 led to a Federated Republic of Germany, a leftist but democratic and free market nation. Political parties of all sorts were still legal, but one party ended up with undeniable control of the government, the Progressive Democrats. Under the Progressive Democrats, the process of industrialization was accelerated throughout Germany, and the military began to enjoy a great deal of attention.

In late 1885, a massive military mobilisation began, eventually leading to the Great War against France and their allies. Scandinavia, Belgium, and the Moors all gained victory. Austria and Italy also joined on the side of Germany, but the war did not go so well for them. Austria lost much territory to the Ottomans, and Italy pulled out after a massive popular revolution led to the installation of Emperor Pious I, ruler of the Italian Empire.

After victory in the Great War, Germany is now poised to become a world Superpower into the 20th century.
