I've never actually visited this forum until now. I used to play Diplomacy all the time back in middle and high school. What a great game - simple pieces, simple rules, unbounded complexity! I haven't played in about 15 years, but remember loving it, win or lose. It's good to see it still alive after so many years of video games.

If I recall correctly, the game that HDS is referring to was the one where we ended up writing orders for everyone else (our respective "allies") for the rest of the game. It was one turn a day, so we'd get together in one of HDS's english classes and sit in the back of the room.
BTW, never piss off HDS if there's a decent sized stick nearby. That turn I "betrayed" him in, he pounded the hell out of my desk with his metal umbrella. I'm lucky I didn't have to pay damage fees at the end of the semester...
The most recent game I can think of that I've had as much fun in is the Imperial 2 game Ruffhaus is running."I kick a$$ for the Lord!"

I first discovered it when I was at high school, about 12 years ago. I was in a wargames club, not a school one, but a few kids from school were there. I had got bored of playing Warhammer and W40K and started to play historical stuff with the older members there. They introduced me to Dip and I was hooked. Unfortunately, I then forgot all about it when I went to Uni (not sure why, probably drink-related, like so much in my life). I played a lot of computer games in those years, especially civ2 and that's how I rediscovered Dip, when looking for new challenges in the Poly civ forums.
PBEM dip I think is better than f2f because it was easier to work out who was allied with who in f2f - organising stabs was so laborious becuase you could see it coming if your ally suddenly started talking to your enemy. And using variants is much easier too on PBEM."Life is like a bag of Revells - you're always searching for The Orange One"

Marquis, why don't you sign up for a game?
Maybe when the kids are old enough to learn it themselves, we can gang up on some unsuspecting opponents...
