None of the factions have yet been described, named, specified or planned. Only 2 factions are known: aliens and "natives." So right now there's not that much to write, but if you Mark want to, you could come up with a few suggestions as their descriptions (aliens and "natives"). Of course there's 30 other "civs" too, but no plans yet. I can't recall antyhing about them from FreeAC Forums either, so it's pretty much open now. So suggestions are more than welcome; however GW or Blake might already have some ideas.

There have been one or two old discussions on the FreeAC forums, with lots of ideas. I think a discussion on these needs to be started once the StP forums are up, or something..

A socialistic faction would be good I think. Disadvantages would be efficiency and technology most likely. Advantages would be few or no riots and something else which escapes me at the moment. No formal governments, everyone works together for the common good, blah, blah, blah, so on and so forth.

A communist type faction would be good too. Similar to socialism however everybody is definitely not equal. There would be a definitely ruling party but it would be made up of only a select group. Nationalism would be lower however efficiency I guess would be up. Not too sure on all that.

A perfectly laissez-faire capitalistic type faction as well. No government intervention in economy blah, blah, blah bonus to technology but probably open to a certain amount of tech theft as a disadvantage. Generally happy citizens I would think as well.

A theocracy based government would do well too. Lots of morale and overall good character, but a bit stunted on the technology side. Obviously religious hindering on fanatical but that's not necessary I would think.

Is this the kind of stuff you are looking for? They may be too broad or completely off topic. If so, tell me . Otherwise I can come up with some more.

30 or so factions, let's see...

              Socialists
              Communists
              Laissez-faire (sp) capitalists
              Theocrats
Survivalists (as in "survival of the fittest")
              Science freaks
              Eco nuts
              Pacifists
              Corporationists (kinda like Morgan...)
              Transhumanists
              Planet worshippers
              Terraformers (traditional, like Amish)
              Anarchists
              Evangelicals
              Quality-of-lifers
              Raiders
              Explorers
              Seafarers
              Federationalists
              Information hoarders
              Pirates
              Brains in vats
Female dominationists (feminists to the 2nd power.)
              Monks
              Nihilists
              Spacebound pioneers
              Conquestadors
Tough guys ("hmm, lifeless wasteland... perfect place for a base!")
              Drug dealers
              Sadists

Of course, if the idea of "faction engineering" comes true there's no need for 30 premade factions... just having fun here.

Nice list, but I was hoping for a faction by faction description listing things like: leader, leader personality, general play style, goals, SE objectives/aversions etc.
just make up some factions that would make a nice bunch of standard factions for beginners or people to lazy to create custom factions.

My intention was to just outline various possibilities... if people just start writing faction by faction, there's a danger that you get 10 militaristic faction, 10 science factions and 10 eco factions or something like that. The big picture is important, in my humble opinion. Anyway, in the above list I was hoping that the names would speak for themselves, or at least appeal to your imagination... I could elaborate if you'll let me know which ones you're interested in.

Another one would be a manifest destiny type ordeal. Real expansionist, always taking new territory. Not too sure about ideology but probably something a bit restrictive since people would probably be pretty split over the idea but maybe not. So they'd have advantages on the build side of the tech tree unless there's a more appropriate tree (not sure what they all are). They'd be in war fairly frequently but aren't a real conquest type faction if that makes sense.

Taking one of Leland's ideas, a free-information type society. Focused on pure research and technology. A bit idealistic probably. Obviously opened up a bit more to probe teams, espionage and the like. Government would probably be pretty open.

A jingoist/ultra-nationalistic faction would be interesting as well. Of course an advantage would be high morale and few riots, but they'd probably be disliked a bit by other nations. Their main disadvantage would that they're disillusioned by the "our country is best" syndrome and are unaccepting of outside techs and relying on other nations. This would stifle the economy.

                      More as they hit me...

An idea to designate more unique faction personalities can be the Attitudes, that rapresent faction's certain behaviour in a certain field:

PRODUCER:love to produce enterely for his own
BUYER: want to buy this resource from others
SELLER: want to produce, but only to sell
GREEDY: love to produce and not to spend
                        EXCHANGER: love to trade
                        STEALER: love to steal
                        GIFTER: love to gift (=Idiot)
ROBINHOOD: love steal, only to gift
                        ISOLAZIONIST: don't touch it!

                        Examples:
Santiago: PRODUCER MORAL (love to produce troops)
Rose: ROBINHOOD RESEARCH (love to steal techs and publish on common datalinks)
Yang: ISOLAZIONIST GROWTH (hate any interference - will certainly use Iron Curtain Ordinance)
                        etc.

Any other ideas or comments will be welcome.

about the nationalist you can have several of those each thinking there leader is the best....and that can be done with each kind of factions...so that besides having a counter-factions (uni and believers) you would also have people with the same ideology but supporting another leader.....(this would make revolting much more sense......i dont see a uni base revolting and becoming an hive base)....so that besides ideology problems you would also have more of a charismatic problems with factions of the same ideology..

I think that's a pretty good idea. This effectively eliminates the problem of trying to come up with 30 different government types
