  • AI and Missiles

I am trying to get the AI to attack a land unit with missiles. It's not especially interested in the idea right now.

Harlan got it to work in Mongols, so presumably it's possible.

Remove the AI and put a banana in its place.

Does changing the defending unit's role have any effect? I know there's no reason for it, but suppose it had a 3 designation and the AI assumed it was a fighter...just an idea. Could you just deny your missiles the ability to attack air units and avoid making carriers buildable? Civ2 needs a comprehensive game and AI mechanics guide, badly.
I'm not gonna insult Leo's intelligence by saying "change the role to 0." I'm assuming that's the first thing anyone tries. In all honesty I never have.

The AI never uses missiles against land units, only against sea units.

Sure it does, it just has to feel it's worth it.
It does it all the time in the Microprose Samurai scenario for instance.

Basicly the AI will use it's missilies against as expensive units as possible (it compares to the unit it uses cost so it helps if the unit itself is really cheap as well).

Normally the AI only uses them against battleships becouse those are the most expensive units in the game.

                        OK, so I'm a moron.

Anyway, back to the point. Maybe it's something to do with the domain of the missile unit: IIRC, the AI will only use air-based missiles against ships. What exactly are you trying to do here?

I played a regular game one time where a fundamentalist Japan launched wave after wave of cruise missles at me. It was my own fault for letting them grow so large unchecked (half the map), but still it was the only time I have ever experienced that in a civ game. This was about six years ago and it has not happened again. Maybe something in their may help you.

Are these Air missiles? The AI will use land missiles at land targets constantly, but is reluctant to use air missiles against them unless its a strong unit. I'm not sure whether the AI looks at the units defense value to see if its "strong" or the HP value, or some combination thereof.

Again I think it's the unit cost that settles what units are considered targets (as I recall there'll be an old thread where nemo posted about this)...
