I've been trying to use photoshop 5.5 to create units/terrain etc. But when I try to open the saved gif files, the program says invalid file type or some other error message. Does anyone know why this is? Does anyone else use photoshop for this task or do you use other programs? Any advice would be great.

Are you trying to edit ToT files? My Photo Shop has the same problem with ToT files. FW files are fine. I usually switch to some other editor at this point. Paint Shop Pro's good, but if worse comes to worse, I use Paint *shudders*
    *grumbles about work*

What's so bad about Paint. I use it all the time. What else is there that's better?

        Firstly...
Wingif (87a/ non-interlaced) "old(!) but effective"
        Secondly...
        Jasc/PsPro

        Why?
Anything else strips-off the header(compressed bytes, i might add, of a particularly annoying flag) which renders the newly-saved *.gif's unusable by most exe's. (2.78 and further versions)
That's the trick about product's versions; they "remain" compatible!!
