  • UNITS.GIF file in MGE

The UNITS.GIF file in MGE differs from that of "vanilla" Civ2 in several ways. What I am most curious about is the string of eight Barbarian Leaders (each numbered). What is the purpose of these units? Are these actually just spare unit slots?

    Any enlightenment appreciated!

Indeed they are spare unit slots (see your rules.txt they're the "test units"), but they're not limited to MGE, they appear in later versions of Civ2 original (Fantastic Worlds, I think).

The units are usable in the game, but it takes more then just editing the picture to get them into play. I suggest you checkout the Sleague's tips section to learn how.

This is one of the best things about CIV. I play with my latest modified units.gif which includes the extra 8 or so units. I've included jet fighters between fighters and stealth. It basicly lets you extend the game a few more levels with the extra techs and units. If you do it right the AI will use these units well. There are a ton of unit icons at http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare...9/civ2unit.htm

          Thank you gentlemen!!

Actually, I already know about using additional units - I'm about to release an upgrade to my graphics patch/modpack ("HiRes") and wanted to include a UNITS file for use with MGE. Since I only have Civ2 v2.42, I asked my brother for a copy of MGE's UNITS.GIF, he didn't send the README.

Cool - now I can include even more "spare" units! Thanks again!
