  • ToTEdit Alpha Release Sign Up Here!

I am ready to release an alpha version of ToTEdit. As indicted by the fact it is not even a beta release I don't really need to say that its not finished yet!

    What does it do?
OK it allows editing of units, including sounds and images.
It can then produce the edited rules.txt and units.bmp to any directory you like.
It has Wizard style GUI functionality. It integrates with CivConverter so FW/MGE/CiC scenarios can be turned into ToT scenarios.

Why am I releasing it now? I want to get a feel for who is interested and I want feedback. I want people who are going to use this - consider it a playtest.

When will it be finished? who knows!
    Whats in the pipeline?
    A techs editing screen.
    Then improvements.
    Then terrain.
Then the other bits of rules.txt like map relationships, cosmic etc.
    Then an events wizard.
Then automated hex editing (although by the time I get to this Civ4 will be out...).

THE BAD NEWS AND THE SMALL PRINT:

    Supported platforms:
Win 98 ONLY, although Win 95 will *PROBABLY* work.
It definitely won't work on NT4 or W2K or XP.
    It might work on ME.
(why? there is a techie answer but basically its because I don't have access to PCs with those operating systems).

The one off install of the runtime bits and pieces that actually run ToTEdit requires a reasonable understanding of things like registry entries, paths etc. If you don't know how to backup your registry then stop reading NOW.

    THE EVEN WORSE NEWS:

The one off install of runtime pieces occupies ~200 Mb. Zipped this is about 50 Mb. I plan to get this down smaller but figure on it being about that. I now a lot of people will be put off by this so I am prepared to CUT A CD AND SEND IT IN THE POST!

    STILL INTERESTED?

Simply email totedit@chrispoole.co.uk and I will add you to the list. Bear in mind that if you want a CD rather than have a 50 Mb email arrive then I will eventually need your postal address.

    QUESTIONS?

Post any questions here so answers can be shared.

Wonderful Miner. I've sent you an email. I still believe in the potential of ToT, especially given certain recent events concerning the release of another game. In fact ToT is the antithesis of Civ3. It's a good game with bad graphics.

Well, that's a really big project (in regards of needed space, too), but still sounds very good to me...
Is there now way to download it from any website? I'm interested in it, but I don't have a 100MBs of mail storage...

Unfortunately, I know of no ISP that will happily host 50Mb for free. My own ISP gives me a couple of Mb, so it would be possible for me to post the extra, later screens to download.

I am just glad I have ADSL at work! It might not be able to post it anywhere but anyone with access to an internet link better than ISDN (you could do it on ISDN, take a while though) could receive this by email.

Have received your email, you're the first!

Any more takers? the more the merrier and the more inclined I will be to work on screens rather than go down the pub!

DarthVeda? oh maker of unpronounceable WW2 scenarios? Mercator the map maker? Anybody!

Looks like a great tool, only the lack of Win2k support drives me...hm mad Is there no way to change this?

              Thats 2 I have now.

All I need is a PC with W2K on it to be able to produce the runtime stuff that needs to be distributed. I don't have a W2K PC so it ends there. If I get hold of other PCs with other OS then I will happily do this. Have you considered a dual boot PC? I mean how would you play Civ anyway? I understand that W2K, like NT4, is not a games plaform and ToT will not run on it.

I only use Win2k, and Civ2 and ToT run perfectly...

I´m not a programmer, so I have no deeper unterstanding of the technical details...

BTW, why can´t you upload it somewhere on the web - there a lots of companies who give free web space away?

I have DSL, so a download would be no problem (at least I would try to start in under Win2k ), but my email box allows only 5MB attachements...

It's likewise for me - my main desktop computer is a win2k machine, luckily the laptop is running under win98... ToT and any other versions of Civ run smoothly under both platforms. I also use a DSL connection, so the download time is no issue, but the limited size of my email box is.

But Bernd, couldn't you assign Miner a gamigo account?

OK looks like the above website does indeed deliver, so ToTEdit will be available for download (wait for it!).

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen technical difficulties this weekend (I ballsed up), the runtime distribution is not ready to rock. This puts me back a week but it does mean I have more time for programming this week.

If none of you have CivConverter I suggest you get hold of it now.
