  • Age of Arturius

    Known today as 'King Arthur'. He was, for awhile, Vortigern (High King) of the Britons and saught to fight of the invading Saxons, Jutes and Angles.
    An updated version of this scenario coming soon.
    As for events I can only envisage continental notification events, Plague events, lives of the Saints events and city captured events.
    Can you think of any more?

    Have you replaced the huts with the crosses? They're a cool touch.

              New Unique Unit

              Whilst playing John Elis's 100 Years War my I came across the Unique Unit 'Mont Saint Michael'. A very innovative use to represent strategic bases that are not cities. So inspired by this I decided to create a Unique Unit 'Lindisfarne' to represent the Holy Island that was a religious centre for both the Romano-British and Anglo-Saxons. It too is connected to the mainland by a cause-way that is submerged during hightide.

                Get Going!

                Apolyton has hosted the scenario, the original version, which is good as you will be able to discern for yourself what has improved.

                I may release the updated version in a few days.

                  Changes, so far

                  The Lindisfarne is going to have a more authentic look.
                  The Roads will be of a subtle style.
                  Saint Unit to be made, perhaps with Diplomacy capabilities to convert the Germans, Scots and Picts.

                  Indigenous British wonders?

                  So far;

                  Stone Henge
                  Hadrian's Wall
                  Baths of Aqua Sulis
                  Saxon Shore
                  Light-House of Portus Ardaoni
                  Giant's Causeway
                  Antoninus's Wall
                  Bolas Stones
                  Maiden Castle
                  London Bridge
                  Cairns

                  There are more though and they must be represented.

                          Some of your units are wonderfull! Having completed a unit search much like yours a few weeks ago, I can say I covet your saint, bishop, and, most of all, your ram. I have almost no original unit graphics in my scenario. (Which is called "The Lost Island" BTW.) I find it interesting, however, that you have Vortigern and "Arthur" as one person in the same. Scholarship does not seem to bear this out. Vortigern is belived to have made his famous blunder c. A.D. 450. Using Nennius, who is the only contemporary source that mentions Arthur, Churchill dates the Battle of Mount Badon quite accurately to between A.D. 490 and 503. The victor of that famous battle, (Arthur, according to Nennius) and Vortigern lived a generation apart! That said, again, the units look great.

                            Vortigern

                            Thank you for your comments, make use of any units you like, I did (some originally by Berne Brosing-easy to tell by their fine graphic quality). On the subject of Vortigern it is merely a title equivalent to 'High King' the real name of the man who was known by this is otherwise unknown. Therefor it is sensible to call Arturius 'Vortigern'.
                            Going to Istanbul for a week, so I will be back to scenario making/revising soon.

                              Flags

                              A minor detail I know, but it would make a difference.

                              Wondering what the flags/emblems of each civ would look like.

                              Gallo-Romans= Possibly the Chi Rho monogram that constantine saw.
                              Dumnonians=The same?
                              Saxons=?
                              Angle-Jutes=?
                              Hibernians=The Hand of Nuadha (legend says that the first settlers on approaching Hibernia in a boat decided that the first person to touch the shore would be made king, so Nuadha cut of his left hand and threw it to the shore!)
                              Scots=?
                              Picts= I chose a wolfs head, as this was one animal they liked to depict, but it is hardly a national emblem.

                              Which Arthurian film do you think comes close to representing the real era of the 5th-6th century?
                              Watched John Boorman's Excalibur, rich in moral tale but the shiny metal armour belongs to the 15th-16th centuries AD. 'The First Knight' staring Sean Connery came closer in costume. Whilst a serialisation called 'Merlin' came even closer.
