  • Batch files and Windows XP

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP installed on it. I'd been putting off downloading Techumseh's Russian Civil War for ToT until I could get everything up and running, and only managed to get around to downloading it yesterday. I ran the batch file to "Bolshevize" the scenario, but discovered to my chagrin that Windows XP can't handle batch files.

Is there anyway to get around this annoying glitch, or do I have to resort to copying, pasting and renaming whenever I want to play a scenario with a batch file?

I also had another problem trying to get Civ2 MGE to work using Cedric Greene's patch. The computer told me it could not find XDaemon.dll to run the Civ2.exe, despite the fact that the file was in the Civ2 directory! Has anyone else had these problems with XP?

I think I know what the problem is.

You need to put choice.com in your winnt\system32 directory after extracting it.

I've attached it to make it easier to download. For some odd reason, Microsoft decided not to include it in their XP release.

Choice is what allows users to run batch files with menus. Without it, the batch file will probably stop and say "unrecognized command or file name."

I know why it's called Microsoft doesn't want to have backwards compatability go here for more information. It's just another one of their ploys to prevent people from being able to do DOS stuff on XP.
