Question about Granaries . . .

Do Granaries function regardless of which tech they are tied to? I know that the Temples and Cathedrals do not function unless the civ constructing them has Ceremonial Burial and Monotheism, respectively.

Are Granaries the same?

I was under the impression (for some reason) that Granaries had to be tied to Pottery to function.
