  • The best historical scenarios?

What are the best (IYHO) historical scenarios? This is for a feature I would like to implement on my new web site. It's not for yet ANOTHER hall of fame list, as such. Something along those lines, though. I would also like to see which scenarios I have not yet played.

Case's Cruel Sea would be on my list, so would J.B.'s Spanish history scenarios. One of my other favorites is The Ascendence of Europe by Nick Holzapfel. Come on, suggest away!

Aw shucks (I hope that you mean version 2 )

Captain Nemo's 'Front' scenarios are a must (though they are on every other civ page in the world...)
John Ellis's scenarios are also worth a nod
Ditto BeBro's Cross and Cresent 2 and Imperium Romanium
Harlan Thompson's Mongols scenario is a must as well.

    the list goes on...

Yes - ver. 1 was great, but I never could get that damn spy to do anything worth while. Ver. 2 is better yet. My best is 3683, how's that rate?

I'm rather fond of Alex/Nemo's Civil war, although I don't really have that much of a feel for the overall accuracy.
Harlan's Dagor Brogallach is also pretty accurate in that it mirrors the history of the Silmarillion pretty closely.

MJ also has a few that rate fairly well on wrt the accuracy, but I can't for the life of me remember their names right now.

I am an oldfashioned player; I'd say Harlan's Vikings and Mongols 2.0 (everyone else likes the new version) and Balsinde's Alba de America and El Dorado.

Harlan's Mongols is the first to come to my mind: I felt like I was really leading the Horde across the world!!

And his Viking Age was great as well!!

            It seems I'm copying St-Leo...

And I liked Justinian too (but just can't remember who didi it!!).

Justinian is a Gothmog design, and his work should also be included.

Pitt's war, Brown man's burden, Justinian, just to name three are all fine historical scenarios.

Exile's work should be mentioned, Dawn of the modern era is very accurate depiction of 16th century Europe.
His revamping of the orginal Cross&Cresent, Medieval Dark Ages, is not to be missed, it's one of the best and least heralded scenarios on the net.

Kindal also has a number of excellent historical scenarios.

Two of my favorite historical works are by Kull, from his Anciet empires series.

I would also like to mention Stefan Hartel, who has a fine body of historical work, over a dozen!

For pure historical accuracy, I would go with John Ellis and Jesus Balsinde, it would be difficult to find more historically accurate scenarios then those put out by these men.
The Colonies series, Hellas, Seize the Crown, Bonaparte and soon to be relesed Bonaparte II are all excellent.

Jay has done so many scenarios, one bit of excellence after another, that it's hard to pin-point just a few.
Alba de America, Al Andulas, Of Celts and Iberians, and many others, all fine works of high historical accuarcy, and more importantly, fun to play.

I would also like to mention Nemo/Mor, Red Front is probaly the best historical scenario ever, but 2194 days, while visually stunning, is very poor history.
See FMK's update, as well as Pap's giga-map versions, for better history.

My personal favourites are The Mongols: From Genghis to Kubilai Khan by Harlan Thompson and Alba de América by Jesús Balsinde. These two are footed on a huge scale and are yet more detailed than a great number of others out there. 2194 Days of War by Captain Nemo goes in that direction too, but I'm not really a fan of WWII scenarios, if only because of the topic. Imperium Romanum by Bernd Brosing and Seeds of Greatness by Kull rank amongst my favourites as well, along with practically any scenario by Jesús Balsinde and Mike Daumen.

I thought Hurin aka Brian Reynolds made this scenario? And if Harlan really did make this, where can I find it?

                    Red Front
                    2nd Front
                    All of Jay Bee's scenarios
                    Imperium Romanium
2nd Reich (probably the best WW1 scenario out there still)
                    The Habsburg bid for mastery

All that I can think of at the moment.
