I finally reached the stage where civ2 did not seem trivial compared to current events, but helped me to process current events.
I have not looked for a modern afgan scenario - doubt there is one accurate enough, or frankly, moving enough to be tolerable. Thought of Daumens Great Game, which would at least help with the geography, but didnt grab me now.
So what have i started playing -- "Hellas" !!!!!!!!!!!!
And if I had any doubt which civ to play, that was quickly resolved - in these times it could only be the Athenians. Civilized, rational, pragmatic, democratic, brave, individualist (but with strong community) resolutely unfanatical Athens, against the barbarians and fanatics. Colonizing the Aegean, buillding up commerce(agoras, emporias, potteries, and trade routes, wonders, (such as black ware pottery, Homers illiad, etc) and reearching new ideas, expanding in Attica and then the Peloponese, holding off the Persians on land and sea. It has provided surprising solace.
