  • Map Problem

How shall I explain? Well, for my next scenario about the Vikings I have discovered a big problem. Sfter testing out the map a bit I came to the definit conclusion that it is too small and offers too little deepth. No problem I thought, I make a new map!

End of dreams. Whatever method I have tried new map are either even smaller or have the wrong propartions or, what I want them to be, huge. As a matter of fact they would be so huge they wont work with FW and cannot be changed with the MapEditor of CivII.
I already tried out Mercator MapEdit and it is a great tool but could not help solve my problem.
Thing is the current map that is too small is 103x94 squares already.

I tried getting the new maps down to the right size by removing lots of lands I don't need and reducing the Atolantic by half. Still I can't get a map that will work.

Any advice on what to do? Shall I keep it the way it is?

Here is a screenshot of it at my site:
I hope it fits onto the screen...

      Check your Mailbox Bernd! Thanks!

      Some more comments:

When you look at the screenshot you should keep in mind that the map does extend several more squares into the east but I couldn't get that onto the screen anymore... That area will be removed anyways...

Hi, Hendrik! The map looks great to me, I can see you've put a lot of work into it, but if you want to make it smaller, I'd suggest you to reduce the Atlantic Ocean...

Sometimes you have to choose between realism and playability, that's happened to me a pair of times before... but I think everyone would be for playability and fun.

          Edit:sp...

In a new atempt I have done that but it didn't solve my probleme. Using smaller squares on the map I am working on still gave me more than 10922 fields.

So do you think the map is good enough to play one?
Some countries are just so small...

              Mathias,

I see no problem about some countries being small... You're probably not going to put huge cities there, are you?

And one more suggestion... you could take out the western extrem of America... I believe the Vikings didn't penetrate so much in the inner land...

Oh, and maybe you should put some grassland squares in Greenland... I've read it had very fertile lands during the Middle Ages...

Note: please pardon my English, I don't have much time to take care of it...

Of course it's good enought, large maps lead to boredom.

I agree, it's hard to use an land of Tundra as a stepping stone to America.

                  Alright!

About Greenland: There are two squares that are Grassland and very fertile. The tundra you see around it will be far more useful than in the normal game. The reason for only two Grass squares it that I don't want the AI to found too many cities on Greenland and on the wrong location.
I can't really explain more but it has to do with the events and with what happened later on in Greenland in real history.

About the map size: Alright. Then we will see a lot of action in this scenario. I just had a wonderful new idea...
America is just the right size. I included a bit more than what the Vikings discovered so there is more room for exploration and so that the Native Americans have some place to live, too.
But Eastern Europe might get smaller, maybe.
