  • The "Paratroops" pop-up text message; Trigger?

I'd like to know what precisely triggers the pop-up text message that appears in the default game when a civ aquires combined arms and the paratroops unit becomes available to build.

Is it the UNIT or SLOT that triggers the pop-up?

Or is it the Combined Arms tech?

    Does anyone know for certain?

I don't know for sure, but I think it's the availability of the unit in almost all such cases. Look at the FW History of Midgard scenario and see what prerequisite the Sorcerors unit has. If I remember correctly, learning how to build the sorceror, which was in the engineers slot, caused the "you may now transform terrain" message to pop up even though the sorceror wasn't a settler type and thus couldn't do that. If the sorceror wasn't intended to be an engineer at all, which seems to be the case, I don't see why they would bother giving it the Explosives prereq, and common sense would dictate that all those kinds of messages work in the same fashion. This is just a guess/strong suspicion though.

I believe that the message is linked with the unit slot for the paratrooper, rather than the combined arms tehcnology.

I'm pretty sure it's the slot. The Highlanders unit triggered the message for me in your scenario.
        I refute it thus!

It's a nice way of adding a big text message without filling your events with it, isn't it...

No, Brian is correct. It's the slot.

One drawback is that the message only appears if the tech (making the paratrooper available) is researched, and then only for a human player. AFAIR it doesn't appear if the unit becomes available as a result of a tech trade or givetech event.
