  • Those pesky Papal States!

I'm playing as England, the year is 1475. Brittany has gotten me in a war with Genoa, who control Roma. I just captured Roma from them and will probably end up with it after the war. If I recall correctly, if you are not the Papal States and control Roma, all catholic nations get a major stick up their ass when dealing with you. Can I avoid these consequences by releasing the Papal States as a vassal?

    Yes,

I don't think there is a relations hit just for controlling Rome (you'd get one if you did the annexing, of course).

The "tic" they get is permanent casus belli against you if you either control Rome or are at war with the Papal States.

Releasing them as a vassal immediately removes the CB, and gives you a decent vassal (which has more benefits in 1.09, as you probably know).

Well, the CB itself produces a gradual relations hit (your relations slowly go down with countries that you have a CB on or that have one on you).
