UK is a boatload of work. Belgium is mostly out of harm's way, will have a few opportunities to try at colonialism, and will be pretty simple to industrialise and modernise. My first game was as Belgium. Vicky is so complicated that running UK succesfully will be very daunting, and it's very easy to run it to the ground.

The UK, of the large/great powers, is probably one of the toughest ones to play, with Russia and France being more difficult. And I myself can handle France and Russia if I can keep the UK in check military-wise, but every time I've played the UK it's all fallen apart.

I find Vicky hard for easy games. Almost every country has its strong weak points.

If you want to learn how industrialisation works, go Belgium or Sweden, maybe France.

Prussia, Austria, US, UK, all have their downsides, same for Russia, Japan...

I would recomend belgium or Sardinia-piedmont for a new player.

i was thinking in EU2 terms, where the big powers are easiest. Obviously this is a very different game.

It's not really an issue of which is easiest to succeed with, but which is easiest to manage. Victoria has the most micromanagement of all the paradox games, and it's much easier to start off with a small country rather than an empire like britain which would probably be extremely overwhelming to a new player.

Belgium is a good choice for a new player because it only consists of a few regions, it starts off industrialized, has pretty much everything it needs to continue growing well, and it's in a fairly stable environment (excluding the initial war with the netherlands - which serves as a good introduction to the military side of the game).


Sardinia-Piedmont is a more challanging choice, but it likewise starts in a stable environment and is ripe for industrialization. There's alot of room to grow with possibilities of colonization or uniting italy. It's a fun country to play that allows you to choose how much trouble you want to get into.

Oh yeah, and Belgium's independence is guaranteed by the UK, so if someone attacks you, they'll have to deal with the UK. The AI UK isn't quick on reaction, but when it does finally stage an attack, it likes to do it big time with dozens and dozens of divisions.

Ive also kept up the alliance with the UK, and avoided alliance with other powers.

The UK has to much going on for a newbie. I'd go with Brazil since it doesn't have the 1848 revolts, doesn't have to worry to much about invasions, has an economy which is profitable right off the bat, and it still large enough to have fun with.

i looked at Brazil, for my second game - but gad thats a lot of provinces to manage.

Id rather a country larger than Belgium, but not too large, and with both coal and iron. Not many like that, are there? Sardinia I guess, which can get iron with modest expansion?
