So its 1590. Ive had Portugal as ally, relations 200, since vassalizing them via event in 1580. So why not DA them NOW, since surely Phillip II is impatient at the lack of expansion the last 15 years, and Id get their map, too.
Cause it triggers "bad boy wars" - at least I think thats what they were. The day after the annexation Austria declares war (they have very fast messengers for 1590).
Along come their allies, Cologne, and Poland. Nasty war, esp as Im still several land techs behind, and Portugal has hardly any troops to contribute. I hold them off for a while. I join an alliance with France, Pope, Verona. Though its too late for this war. The bankruptcy even in 1592 makes things even harder, and i make peace, giving Lombardy to Austria. Genoa and Venice go to war on me, and France refuses to come to my aid. Im doing ok against Genoa and Venice, despite my poor geographic position in Italy, when France declares war on me. Shortly after than England does so as well, bringing along several small allies.
At this point I decide reloading will create a more interesing game.
I went back to 1589, and refrained from annexing Portugal. I finished tax collectors in every province, continued building governors, conversions, and catching up in military tech - only two techs behind in each now (1605). Put down some revolts, survived the bankruptcy event and the moriscos event. Events have moved stab up to 3. I now have an alliance including Portugal, Papal States, and the Netherlands. It looks like it may be possible to bring in Austria. Starting to get ready for a big war against France, maybe. (just in time for the 30 yrs war)
France looks a little more dangerous to me than Austria. Austria is slightly bigger and richer, but France is closer, and is a maritime power.
