That's why it's better to turn off almost all background programs when running these games (it also tends to improve stability somewhat ) and not do much ALT-TAB-ing either....

This sounds a bit like what happens when I load it up too. It didn't do it before I installed XP though so it's almost certainly platform-related.
It isn't necessarily related to background apps either as I never have anything else running.
