  • How good is Europa Universalis?

I've played Civ from its early days... of 2D Civ1. I keep on hearing about this Europa Universalis... I'm pondering whether I should buy it or not, but is it worth buying?

well, for me it is the best game I ever played. I used to be a fanatic civ`er 2 years ago, but then i bought eu and later eu2 and since then I hardly play any other game

I find EU2 to be much more enjoyable then Civ3. They are both both similiar games in concept (build an empire, research technology, deal with neighbors) so if you like one you will probably like the other.

but I hear that EU is tedious and doesn't flow like civ... any truth to that?

            It's very good.

It's not tedious because you continually research new technologies.

The only possible tedious thing is if you don't adjust the time bar... and you are playing a pedaceful trader... you can set time however; and play at any speed. A war monger will want to run slow wheras a trader/colonizer will wait for colonists, etc. But everyone will fight at least once.

Civ and EU are like primordial twins.

I think you might enjoy EU I. But remember to get the patch from the site; since teh game crashes a lot without the patch. (its about 1 mb) however; EU II has more features, such as the HISTORY bar which records all your wars, etc.

hmm... now that I think about it... well maybe I think it flows cause I play it to much... ya I guess its not smooth but well if you have a fast enough computer I guess it you wouldn't have to wait for to long between turns...

I guess it depends on what you mean by the word "flow". If you mean game speed then both games go quickly on my computer but I have a P4 system. I do like how EU2 allows players to adjust the speed of time but that feature wouldn't work in Civ3 since it is a turn based game and not a real time game.

In terms of game mechanics I'd say both games "flow" just about the same. Sure, there are slow parts and it can be tedious to put down reoccuring rebellions but that's just part of the game. A concicence of bad government policies that the player decided upon. Besides, I'm a war monger and I love hacking peasant rebels to pieces.

EU2 seems like a perfectly polished and complete game (once patched ). It's a beautiful play experience, and I enjoy it more than I do Civ (though I've probably spent more time playing Civ, simply because it's strangely addictive, and I've had it longer ).

But I'll have to wait a couple of weeks till I get back home to really start playing...

Be sure to go to Paradox's excellent site and get your install patched (v. 1.05) as well as read the prodigious and well-done FAQs. They are much better than the manual.
