  • Diplomacy golden

Paradox's pre-WWI strategy game marches off to factory, will wage war on PCs October 4.

Would-be kaisers and kings will soon be able to carve up an imaginary 19th-century Europe on their PCs, as today Diplomacy went gold. Based on the popular board game of the same name, Diplomacy is being developed by the Swedish strategy specialists at Paradox Interactive. It's the second PC adaptation of the game, following a 1999 version by the now-defunct Hasbro Interactive.

While Diplomacy uses the historical setting of Europe prior to World War I, it's not a typical historical wargame. With looks that are very much like its board-game inspiration, the turn-based title's abstract visuals and simple gameplay put focus on negotiation between nations, in addition to broad strategic maneuvering.

Rated E for Everyone, Diplomacy will ship to stores on October 4 in the US and in Scandinavia, with releases in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg scheduled for October 28.

I'll probably buy it but it's not listed on Amazon UK yet.

Thanks to the 6 pack, I own but have not yet played Vickie and HOI, so ive got plenty of backlogged Paradox gameplay.

I am curious about how good this is in single player, since it seems like the kind of game that would be good only in MP - since its based on well, diplomacy, deals, backstabbing, etc - all the things AIs are traditionally not good at. If theyve really cracked the problem of making an AI thats good at deals, backstabbing, etc, this will be a powerful tool whenever they get back to making more "traditional" Paradox games like EU3 - heck, it would be important in the TBS world as well.

I'm pretty worried about that game. IRC there were only two units in the board Diplomacy: an army and a fleet. And whole idea of that game was about to make alliances and backstabing eachother, 'cause fighting mechanism was too damn simple - whoever have more units will win. Well, perhaps it was just a Russian version that didn't include a research tree, various units, advanced combat etc., I'm not really sure. Besides, it was so long ago.

Despite the fact that EU1,2 or any other Paradox game could hardly be called a true TBS.

I've been pretty unsure on this game. I have bought all Paradox games since EU1 and liked them all, if not all to the same degree(HoI1/2 I got tired of pretty soon f.ex.), but Diplomacy is the first I have doubts whether or not I'll buy. I tend to think for now I won't.

But anyway, here's a guy who have got the press copy, writing on Paradox's forums: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/...d.php?t=214380

This one can't possibly be as good. I feel like it's going to be the black mark on Paradox's perfect record.

The AI is going to be very weak and it will only be fun in MP. That means you still need to find 7 players who want to play at the same time though you could limp along with the AI running one or two countries. Who ever starts next to the AI will have an unfair advantage though since the AI will suck compared to humans.
