    What's the rule?
I got really puzzled when they elected Aztek emperor in one of my games as emperor of HRE... (Azteks converted to catholicism earlier), not to mention election of Polish kings for example...>

I think its just whichever Catholic country that has the best overall relations with all the electors.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

      Yep.

But I also believe that the Hapsburg countries (i.e., Spain & Austria) get a bonus in the elections.

They used to get a huge bonus but now they just get a small bonus.

I thought to be elected HRE you had to be an elector which meant you had to have a province in the HRE. I guess I was wrong.

I guess so. I don't recall the game, but I don't think Aztecs had a single European province

All catholic countries can get the Emperor title, also if they own no land in the HRE or in Europe at all. If all Catholic countries are extinct, then any nation can get the title, but I think other Christians have to get extinct too before any non-christian get the title.
