I play it from time to time, but I mostly play CK these days.

Nah, while it's good, it's nothing against EU2 and CK IMHO.

I have to admit that Vicky is the only Paradox Game that never got me addicted... I played as Sweden, Prussia, China, Mexico and Austria but never managed to reach a dominating position...
While this is historically correct and realism at it´s best, it kinda turns me off for I know I´ll never do it right
The one game when I played USA and got kicked by a revolting CSA and a warmongering Mexico was the last one for 5 months now (although hearing you talk about it tempts me to reinstall Vicky...)
I still think HoI(C.O.R.E.) and EU2 are better in terms of fun and gameplay as well as in keeping up interest. I am playing EU/EU2 since 5 years now and I still have the latter installed (never went off my disk)
Sounds like you need to change what you're doing to do better. Have you read the guides at the paradox boards? Memnon, Darkrenown, and one other guy there give great advice.
Vicky is a deep game that has a steep learning curve but once you master just a few basics you'll be on your way to victory. The difficulty of mastering this game is what makes it stand out from their other products.
The bad part of Vicky imo is that it is very front-loaded. If you play the first few years perfectly its vastly easier afterwards. At least in EU1/2, CK and to some extent HoI (1936) you can dither around at the start learning the ropes without messing yourself up.
I like complicated in depth games and viccy was just too much for me.
Especially I hated not being able to directly control colonization or trade.
And colonization is SO EXPENSIVE I bankrupted myself as UK trying to colonize Canada.
"Wait a minute..this isn''t FAUX dive, it's just a DIVE!"
"...Mangy dog staggering about, looking vainly for a place to die."
"sauna stories? There are no 'sauna stories'.. I mean.. sauna is sauna. You do by the laws of sauna." -P.
Thats the thing about getting the first few years right. Make a perfect industry model for profit or expansion and you're 5x or 10x better off than someone who is just slowly and carefully expanding.
