  • Lucasarts' X Wing vs TIE Fighter

My exhousemate HMB is in trouble. He says he's got this game XvT and he's playing the training missions.

There's one mission called Warhead Interception. He says that you are playing as a TIE Bomber and have to shoot down incoming warheads before they sink an Interdictor. He complains that he can't finish the mission.

Does anybody play X Wing vs TIE Fighter first of all?

And if so, has anybody finished this training mission? What tips could you give?

This mission was a direct copy of a training mission from TIE Fighter, Collector's CD-ROM.

The Mission used to be for the Missile Boat (MIS), and was a lot eaiser with that, since you could use your advanced concussion missiles on those proton torpedeos.

Yes it is very hard with the (T/B), but the trick is to make a run for the TRNs that are fireing the missiles, run behind then and knock 'em out that way before they fire the missiles.

I'm not sure, but I think you can select a beam weapon for training missions, may I suggest you select a beam weapon (either Jamming or Tracking), and then when you play the mission, drain all power from the beam weapon into the engines for added speed. Then increase laser recharge rate up by one.

You might call this cheating, but in XvT combat, this is the way you do it (Particulary if you have Balance of Power).

Also, perhaps selecting a different type of fighter might be useful, after all this is a training mission, and you want to get a good feel with each fighter as best as you can. T/Bs are not very good at interception missions. I should know, I love playing as T/Bs.

I hope this will be of help. This is from a 1st Class Ace (I never could get higher, since XvT is horrible at Multiplayer, unless you have both a super fast CPU (like 233MHz or better) and cable modem).

XvT was good at the time, but was sorely lacking in that it had no storyline like TIE Fighter did (which had an awesome story). It really was more or less a test run for the multiplay feature. The Balance of Power expansion pack remedied this somewhat, but not enough.

X-Wing Alliance is the truly great multiplayer flight sim game from LucasArts. An excellent story plus their superb MP elements.

I for one would love to see a re-release of TIE Fighter with updated graphics and engine and MP features. It's still the best one they ever did.

What XvT lacked in Story, it gained in easy access to your own custom made levels.

XWA sucked hard in this department, mainly because you couldn't fly any Imperial fighter in custom Single Player missions, and the ones you do make you have to play all the way until the end of the original story to get to just to test the damn thing.

And being a strong Imperial supporter, XWA has two thumbs down in my book (toe Thumbs that is ).

I flew TIE Fighters all the time in custom single-player missions in XA. Not sure what you mean...?

How about Gunboats? My second fav fighter (next to the T/B). You can't fly in those things in custom single player missions.

                Tie Fighter ruled.

I recall one mission where I was sent out in a bomber with about twenty other bombers, I was the only one that came back. The next mission briefing starts out with "Due to a shortage of tie bombers . . " heh heh. That was when tthey started equiping tie fighters with torp launchers.

The empire wouldn't have this problem if they would just send along some competant fighter escorts. . .

ain't nothing more annoying than dogfighting as a tie bomber.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean by "custom single player missions," but I thought you meant creating your own battles where you add all the ships, set the kind of space (asteroids or not, etc.) and all that. And in that, every fighter is available to fly.

I used to play this game a lot, but it got very very old. It would be nice to see another game like this come out in the Star Wars Genre.

No, I'm not talking about combat simulator, I'm talking about making your own SP levels.

I think I recall that mission. It was in one of the first battle compagins... perhaps the one with Hoth.

i liked this game in multiplayer.

One time is was dogfighting with my friend in TIE Advance's. Anyway, I could see his TIE shaking uncontrollably. Anyway, I call him up on my cell phone and he tells me his joystick was broken....so the whole time I was taking potshots at him.

Needless to say, he was pretty pissed at me after that.
