    Anyone played this game?

    Nice game of puzzles and mysteries. Fairly dated now. Looking for some more of the same.

        Myst came out about the same time, but it's not nearly as good (and despite how hard it claims to be it took less than a week to beat playing off and on). Some of the old King's Quest games (4 notably) are really good. Not quite the same genre they're still puzzle games mostly.

          They're all absolute graphics-over-content crap. I mean, they're contemporary with some of the most classic adventures ever, for gossakes, and people still bought them because they were on CD-ROM and looked flash. Geez.

              I wouldn't call it utter crap… some engaging puzzles in it… hard enough so that I couldn't finish the thing!

                I played 7th Guest at a friends' house and thoroughly enjoyed it. Between us we cracked most of the puzzles. Iirc we got stuck in the chapel having resolved all the other rooms in the main house.

                I'm not usually a fan of these games because they are either too easy, too hard or just plain nonsensical. Working as a team 7th Guest was a comfortable challenge for the pair of us so I remember it fondly.

                These days of course adventure games are vulnerable to the internet. If you get totally stuck someone somewhere will have published the answer to your problem (which is good) but it is almost impossible to visit those sites without picking up other information you didn't want to know. Some game designers seem to use internet/magazine solutions as an excuse to present whole strings of ludicrously convoluted puzzles that you need to have specialist knowledge to solve. Everyone else might as well just sit down with a walkthrough because there's no way they are going to get through the game without one.

                  The puzzle I hated was the Othello clone with the bacteria that changed colour. Damned annoying.

                    I thought it was pretty cool... but somehow Myst was better, had more to do, and still had the creepy factor, for me at least... (dang it, where are all the people in this place? )

                      Creepy factor??? Solving second-rate non-character-based puzzles that wouldn't fit into a damn kids play-book? Now, Gabriel Knight was a creepy adventure game, and had puzzles that actually, get this, were an integral part of the story.

                        You are equating puzzles with the atmosphere. Now, I'm not sure how puzzles can be creepy... I was commenting on the atmosphere of the game.

                            Is 7th Guest like Alone in the Dark? Was it many CDs? I heard about one of these with 7 CDs or something.

                              Gabriel Knight was great.
                              7th Guest had some good puzzles, but I don't remember much else
                              I really don't remember much from Myst, since the last time I played it was when the local video store rented PC games.
