  • Diablo 2 MP Question

An online friend and I were trying to start a Diablo 2 LOD MP game (either through IP or battle.net), and we couldn't get it to work. Later on we managed to play when my friend switched to his brother's cable system.

I thought that our failure to connect might be due to either my Norton Firewall or his AOL connection as even when he was using that cable system I couldn't host, and I have heard about some incompatabilities with AOL (gee I wonder why it has such a bad reputation!)

Just wondering if anybody might have some insight as to what reasons are there that it might not have worked. I haven't found any possible info in the FAQ on battle.net.

Ever been able to do it before?
About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. With a simple click daily at the Hunger Site you can provide food for those who need it.

With my ZoneAlarm, I was initially blocked, but a quick perusal showed whiched of the blocked packets were from battlenet, so I was able to set ZoneAlarm to accept them.

See if Norton has a log and lets you do this; it should, on both counts.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

With battle.net your firewall will block you from playing.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds to me as if it is probably my Norton firewall.

I tried to modify my firewall to allow my friend to come through it - that works with the other games we play civ, AOK etc. but it didn't work.

It sounds like zonealarm may be more successful in allowing Diablo 2 MP games so I may try to get that.

zonealarm has a free version, find it at download.com

don't do the tcp/ip games, use battlenet so that you can always join a game if your friend and you are not on at the same time. oh yeah, and you can beg for help from other diablo players that have higher characters.

if you im me or send me a pm maybe we could play a game or two together.

This may seem as obvious as checking to see if the toaster is plugged in, but are both of you running the same version of the game?

                This can prevent a connection.

                  on another topic

I've been thinking of trying this:

I get another computer set up, and keep mule characters on there for the sole prurpose of keeping extra stuff. whenever I get full, I start a network game and trnasfer a bunch to my mule.

I'm guessing this actually happens all the time.

I was just about to point out that Horsie is simply making excuses in advance for why he will suck at Civ III...

mule characters can be used a variety of ways.

you don't necessarily need another computer if you are using battle.net

first join a game with other players in it. drop your items on the ground (don't put it someplace obvious!!!). exit the game then reenter the same game with your mule. pick up items.

Keep in mind if you are playing a nightmare or hell game your mule will have needed to get to those levels as well.
