  • Return to wargames - RE Lee, Civil War General

Ive recently started playing CWG. (original, notCWG2, yeah its old, a "find") First time owned a PC wargame. Played board wargames a lot ages ago (avalon hill, SPI, etc) Im enjoying it more than i expected.

I realize its "light" by grognard standards (units can be resupplied even if surrounded, unrealistic victory conditions, simplified terrain) but after playing Civ, AOE, etc it feels VERY realistic. And relatively easy to learn and play (in contrast to demos of TOAW, AOR, i played, which were impossible, though that may have partly been poor documentation with the demos) .

I've played 1st Manassas, as both South and North. Moved from full visibility to "beginner LOS" (can see and hit within range, fog beyond, obstacles dont matter) played as south and one 1st day of 2nd Manassas. Now playing 2nd day of 2nd Manassas. 2nd Manassas is particularly unrealistic, as full cover advantage of famous unfinished RR is not reflected, so south tends to advance into woods for cover and to straighten line. Nonetheless my understanding of the geography of these battles is improving, and i look forward to playing other famous battles.

I think I have both RE Lee and Civil War General; and I don't think I really played either of them for any length of time.

Other games just took precedence (i.e. SMAX, Tribes2)

[Yay! I score two points for using precedence twice in one day! ]

      Yes, it's a great game.

CWG2 is even better - if you can find it, it's worth the price. . .

There are also a ton of scenarios for CWG2. Here's a page with links:
