  • What should I buy

Ok, my exams are nearing completion (and have nearly started, as well), I have a bit of cash to spare and a £2.50 voucher for EB which I have to spend by September. So - what should I do? Should I buy:

    Half-Life: Generations (HL + the 3 expansions)
    Thief: Gold
    Morrowind
    NWN
Some other RPG I've forgotten about
    Something else entirely

I should also note that the first two options, being slightly cheaper, would probably also allow me to buy both Settlers of Catan and the Civilisation board games, while the others would allow me, at most, to buy one or t'other. I also usually wait for a game to hit £20 or £15 before I buy it.

It's even a poll - but constructive thoughts on your reasoning are appreciated.

My vote goes to either Neverwinter Nights, or Half-Life - depending on what kind of game you want. (Personally, I would prefer NWN)

The main reason for these two games is that they are both designed predominately for multiplayer.
That, and they're just damn good games all around (well, I 'spose I can't say for sure yet on NWN...)

The Banana vote is mine - I wanted to be able to see the poll results easier.

I quite like the sound of an RPG, I haven't actually played a proper one yet, but they sound like huge fun.

Eh, for PC RPGs Baldur's Gate II is probably the best and most famous. And Planescape Torment can be gotten pretty cheaply, I bet. I'm partial to console RPGs myself, which you can get some older ones for free basically via SNES emulation, with the Final Fantasy series of course being the crown of console RPGs.

I just played my first game of Settlers of Catan only recently, and it was quite a bit of fun. It was a nice bootleg style version too with cardboard & playing cards. Nice to see that others play it too.

Therefore this is not a syllogism.

Just for the record, Neverwinter Nights is made by the same people who did Planescape and the Baldur's Gate series.

Neverwinter Nights is probably the closest thing you can get to a 'proper rpg' without playing pen and paper - It allows players to easily create their own worlds, and act as a DM in a multiplayer game.

There are also alot of fan-made persistent worlds planed for it.

There are some of the same people who have worked on Torment, BG, and NN, but that number is small. Many people who worked on Torment have moved on from Interplay. Some of them have worked on Arcanum, which has an atmosphere almost on the level of Fallout.

Ok, so a possibility is: Pick up BG2 or PS:T on the cheap, and graduate onto NWN when it comes down in price? Thus allowing the board game purchases, y'see. Or would you just say "Screw that, straight in with NWN"?

Can't tell you with out playing NWN (which is released in a couple of weeks) and torment (which I am going to be playing in that time.)

Morrowind lets you do pretty much anything you want. The game is very non-linear.

Leveling is good, Thieves actually can level up by picking locks and not neccesarily by killing things.

I'll keep my eyes on this thread then.

I would always go with the plan of picking up the cheap game and waiting for the newer one to come down in price. This has an additional benefit: if the new one turns out to bark at the moon, you'll find out before you spend your money, rather than afterwards.

I picked up Planescape: Torment months ago for $5, and I haven't even started it yet. Still working on Baldur's Gate.
"THE" plus "IRS" makes "THEIRS". Coincidence? I think not.

OK - Baldur's Gate and the that whole stable are fantastic games - but Morrowind is the Elder Scrolls - it was released in the UK TODAY at £29.99 and is on the absolute must buy list!!! In the unlikely event that you can find Daggerfall (Elder Scrolls II) in the discount bin GET IT and you will see what I mean - the Elder Scrolls trilogy IS role playing - you live your life as you like - not driven by some game engine down a moderately linear quest path this is the single failing of the otherwise superb BG family of RPGs.

Buy and enjoy, SG[1] - just finished the second bottle of red

Just to confuse matters more how about Arcanum or Fallout 2 ? Both are a bit unpolished but do offer 'proper' roleplaying in that you can chose your approach and still have lots of options. Fallout especially allows an evil approach for most of the game should you want that. Arcanum is feature rich but not as polished as Baldur's Gate 2.
I've just got Morrowind and i'm having to fight my in built resistance to FPS type setups but is does seem pretty free form. Needs a fairly major PC though.
