  • The Worst FPS engine.

I have to admit I haven't experienced any real stinkers since I'm pretty cautious about what I buy, usually buying about a year back.

My nomination would have to be Thief's engine. I remember setting the resolution down to 640*480 becuase it was choppy the dumb engine however didn't care and remained choppy in fact their was no noticeable performance difference. Personally I think that's what made the game hard was the crappy engine. But maybe my experience was unique?

Deus Ex gets honorable mention. The Unreal engine is excellent but Deus Ex had sorting issues in large areas on GeForce cards. Basically when ever you entered a large open area (Statue of Liberty, Sub Pens) the game would start to choke. It's no big deal that it launched with this problem, but I'm amazed that it was never fixed considering that GeForces are popular cards.

Any horror stories? (I'm thinking this topic will sink like a rock tho)

Hey Moral... you should point out all of the engines... then try ranking them.

Engines I can think of off the top of my head are:

Quake 3, Unreal, uhmmm..... sure I'll smack myself in the head when others are pointed out.
What if your words could be judged like a crime? "Creed, What If?"

I thought that was the Quake II engine.

Thief built their own engine. Thief 2 might have used Quakes but I only played it for 5 minutes So I don't know.

        Engines
        Quake 3.
        Unreal
        Lithtech.
Giants uses their own. (pretty sure)
        Tribes uses thier own.
Half-Life (not really the Quake engine anymore)
        Descent Engine.
        Serious Engine.
Crystal Space (if we want to include free engines)

There is alot of engines and you can't really rank them. Because their better at different things and worse at others. The major licensed ones (Unreal, Quake) compete on technology, and Lithtech is supposedly easy to use.
