  • Any "Championship Manager" players?

Do any other Apolytoners partake of the only game worthy of mention in the same breath as Civ? If so, let's hear from you.

Who do you always buy, how do you play.....? If you're really lucky I'll dig out my best tips.

Is that some fruity soccer game?

      A quick summary of CM

"It's addictive, but it's not fun."

Thankfully, I stopped playing before I became addicted.

I know MarkG is a huge fan. Other than that, I mean, everyone from a football-playing country must have tried some version at one point or another...?

I don't think it's as good as Civ, though. The start of each game is considerably more boring, the learning curve is a bit steep, each game has its long, low, boring periods, it's limited in scope and can't really be modded in a nice way. Great game anyway.

          Why? Me, of course.

I remember talking about the matter with at least Dookie and Kropotkin. Maybe Snapcase too.

It's addictive as hell, the only game I've played as much as Civ2. But especially addictive when you play hotseat against some friends, of course.

With the last one (2000/2001) I've only played in the Spanish and Argentinian championships, and I habven't played enough to win the Champions League yet... I always start with mediocre clubs, so I can say I've built up a champion squad from the scratch...

Good man. I usually play as Bristol Rovers which isn't so much "mediocre" as "truly dire". Getting them promoted in your first season is a real challenge, particularly as they start without any even remotely decent strikers.

Sneak- it's a fruity soccer game. It's also probably got the most primitive graphics of any million-selling game and is more addictive than a Thai lap-dancer lightly oiled and dipped in crack.

Bugs - forum junkie that you are, did you ever cavort around the CM forums? I did, till they banned me...

Haven't played for a while - I never got anywhere with Southampton, but I once made up a team called Clifton City, who I took from the Conference to the first division, starting with a 7,000 seater stadium (called Phil's Basement), no players and 10 grand - I'm quite proud of that one...

My last foray was with FC Copenhagen, but I got bored winning the Danish League every year and then getting consistently stuffed in Europe.

Stranraer was my greatest triumph, but that was with CM2, when these things were a bit easier...

CM blows Civ out of the water!

Normally play as Reading which is becoming easier these days. I have 00/01 but haven't really played it yet 'cause I know as soon as I start it'll eat my life and I have too much to do at the moment.

Greatest moment for me was taking James Lambert from Reading to Chelsea in CM2, making him club and England Captain and winning the world cup.

I was Deceptive Pace on the CM3 forums (signature was "Even slower than you think")

My crowning achievement was in the latest edition to take dover to the premiership and then get offered the job of england manager and then winning the 2010 world cup. havent won the premiership with dover yet but i have won the UEFA cup and the leuge and FA cup for quite a few years. my england reputaion is Worldclass. however i usually play as arsenal and buy martin palermo!!!

To be honest, I stopped after I sprained a hand punching the chair, after a particularly annoying last-minute goal against me that buggered up my European dreams...

                        That game is dangerous...

Interesting - inspired by this thread, I re-installed CM, and played it for the first time in about 5 months.
And quickly realised I couldn't be arsed with the tedium of trawling through the transfer lists, trying various filters, getting promising Yugoslav players and then having work permits denied, and all that arse...

Well, in fact I spent three season trying to get Caudal, a real crappy Spanish team, from third divison (second division B) to second division, and then got bored of that game before being able to make it into the first league.

I'll make sure to send you 1000 quid in case you had heard the name of that team before.
