  • Space Empires IV questions

Any gamers out there have thoughts on Space Empires IV? Does it play like Civ or MOO? Is it too overwhelming in options (I've heard it is), are the games longer or shorter then the typical Civ game (25-30 hrs)? Well any thoughts, pro/con you have for the game, please share them. I'm interested in the game but hesitant on Civ/Moo games after Imperium Galactica II.

I thought it had some really cool aspects. A lot of choice in set-up I wouldn't call it too much. A lot of racial choices, customizable text files if you go for that sort of thing. You can set the end conditions so the game length is as variable as you want it, but mine were inbetween Moo2 and Civ2.

The biggest thing I don't like is the warp point based system. I think it makes the strategy pretty trivial. It's real easy to set up massive defences at choke warp points.

I liked it better than IG2, though that's not saying much!

I'm thinking about buying it, although I'd rather have moo3, but that'll take a while - or so I'm told.

Ditto here, that's why I've been looking into SEIV before MOO3

A couple of questions of my own...

I bought it and have played around with it and I have a couple of questions of my own.

          1. What effect does a planet's population have? What use is it? As far as I could tell, whether a planet has only a few people or is completely full, it doesn't appear to make any difference to the rate of producing or building things at all, or anything else for that matter except possbile happiness but I'm not sure.

          2. Is there any way to increase the number of facility slots on a planet (some form of terraforming) or are you stuck with whatever a planet gives you?

            1. It does. Look at your homeworld and at a planet you just colonized. On your HW info it should say X bonus for pop over 500k, or 2M.

            2. You get 1 slot per size of planet, and that is multiplied by 5 if the planet is breathable for you. There is a building that can make a planet breathable.

Ok, thanks for the info Garth.

From the looks of things, Stars! Genesis may turn out to be a better game. That's one I'm looking forward to.
