  • Railroad Tycoon 2

I just spotted this on the bargain shelf for $12. I loved the original RRT, but the sequel seems to have too much micromanaging and a clinical representation. Worst of all, it reminds me of Transport Tycoon, a game I hated, nom atter how much I wanted to like it.

So, should I get RRT2 or leave it to the shelf (and buy Fly! )?

Why not try the RRT II Demo and then decide?

I liked RRT II, never played TT so I can't compare, but RRT II is a fun game, IMO.

I prefered the original over the sequel.

I don't like these design decisions:
[*] You can't build tunnels.[*]You can't kill people with rate wars.[*]You can't drop off a load at a station that doesn't require that load and have another train to pick it up.[*]You can only build bridges at certain places and the manual doesn't tell you where[*]You can't set priority for each route[*]The computer players aren't restricted by the same diminishing returns as you are[*]You can't build industries[*]Industries disappear even when they are doing a booming business[/list]

It's kinda interesting if you have never played the original, but it does lack the addictiveness and the fun factor that made Railroad Tycoon great.

        I prefer TTDlx myself.

RRT2 is a great game! You need to understand it for what it is. The "tycoon" is there for a reason, since a large part of winning involves how well you run the railroad company, and how great your personal net worth is. It's not just about laying track and running trains. My experience is that you have to go beyond the tutorial, and into the first few scenarios. Then you'll understand the point of the game, and see that it's a lot of fun. There are also tons of scenarios available for it to let you try all different sorts of variations on the game. Try it, I think you'll like it!

That also happens to be the case with the original, which is far better than the sequel. IMO.

Forget the regular edition of RRT2 and go for the gold edition. This is because the gold edition has some interesting things than the regular edition.

I have the gold edition but haven't played it much. Maybe I will try it this summer.

One thing I find annoying is that the map is tilted ie going up takes you northwest . If you change it it only tilts in some other direction (like northeast) . I find this rather annoying since the maps are of realworld places which I am used to seeing the right way up. Anyone knows how to correct this?

BTW which are the interesting scenarios?

That's called a 45 degree isomorphic view, or something like that. You can't have north going up unfortunately.

Hmm so it's an actual design decision. What is the rationale?

I can understand the type of tilt you have in Civ2 (also called isometric?) but the one in RRT2 where scrolling up takes you northwest is annoying as hell.

No idea. I guess that's the only way you can have pseudo 3D without doing a lot of work showing pespectives.

I remember playing the original Railroad Tycoon almost to death. It got to the point where winning was not a matter of if, but when. Transport tycoon I played near to death too.

When I saw a sequal of RT was being released, I anxiously awaited it's release and bought it as soon as it was available. Unfortunately, it was then I discovered that reality, more often than not, never lives up to expectations.

I suppose it was a good game, I just disliked it intensly.

                              Mouse,

                              I don't really dislike RRT 2

I played the original to death too. 80% difficulty if I didn't feel like thinking much. Otherwise, 100% or more.

                              What was your favourite map?
