            Actually, no. I concede.

I have little hope of recovering from this position. A draw seems beyond my chess skills and you have played a very solid game so the scope for mistakes on your part is small.

A nicely played game and a fair end result, congrats!

Looking forward to a rematch, but for now I step down and let someone else have a go.

Oh, no! Carolus, you missed it!!

Qxf2+! A spite check!! Then you resign!

Oh, well. Good game, guys. The king is dead! Long live the king! I think Julius is up to bat next. Good luck Julius. Smash looks to be a formidable opponent.

Current standings in the Apolyton chess league:

              Smash 1-0
              Carolus 1-1
              kcbob 0-1
              Julius 0-0 (for now)

BTW. The move I was looking for was 24. Bf3 with the intent of 25. Rea1 followed by 26. Ra7. Of course, all of this would have to be accomplished while Black didn't make any moves. Probably unrealistic, huh?

smiles and waves to legions of followers that show up to welcome him home at Vancouver International Airport

"It was a tough game.Carolus is a worthy opponent.I feel like I've been thru the grinder."

                Was there ever any doubt?

"Absolutely. The game was very sharp at times.Threats abounded.I almost blew it with a blunder by looking at the wrong postion.Basically I cheapo-ed him to death.I'm not relishing a re-match.Hes' tough"

I had to watch Nb5 if I played Bf3.The Bishop on D1 turned out to be a very good, although somewhat odd, spot for it.I also grew quite fond my queen"s position on D2.

I think we found out why 7....BxN is the preferred line of play.

Well, it was quite a nice game. Smash played very solid and Carolus made only one serious mistake : 12 Nd4. After that, I’m afraid the game is lost in the long run. To try to attack was not a bad idea, but with black’s shattered kingside and white’s two bishops the outcome was, alas, too clear.
Smash, I think you missed a risky but very strong move. Here’s what I had “off line” told Kcbob.

What do you think of 26 h4! for white in the Apolyton world championship game ? The only square for the knight is the horrible h7. Then white plays 27 Bf3, threatening Rxe6 followed by Bd5 which would win the queen. The only answer is Rde8, but then it's Ba5, winning the d6 pawn because Rd7 steps into the Bc6 pin. Two pawns up, total domination, bishop pair and weakend opposite kingside give an outsanding edge to white.
Black could try the tricky 26 Bc8, to give the good e6 square to the knight, but white sacrifies the exchange with 27 hxg5 Bxa6, 28 gxh6 and the atttack is, I think, too strong. 28 gxh6 is not possible for black : 29 Qxh6 Qxf2+ 30 Kh1 and black has to sacrifice the queen to avoid mate (Qxe1, 31 Bxe1 Rxe1+) and will then lose one of his scattered rooks with some smart white queen checks.
I think that after 26 h4! black is totally lost ...

Allright, I think it’s my turn to step us as challenger. Le roi est mort vive le roi. Kasparov wanted to defend his title once every 5 years. Smash, I think that I should defy you much sooner. Something like right now ! Or do you want to take a week off ? You decide, you're the king after all.
I’ll let you start the new topic when you are ready. But do not take too much time, like Fischer. 28 years after winning and 25 after forfeiting, he still pretends to be the world champion.
I propose that I shall take white and that if we draw (or if you win), you keep your title. Does it look correct to everybody.
By the way, my first move if I have white, will be 1 e4 !

Of course, if you don't want to exchange the bishop for the knight you shouldn't let it go to b4. Think of it before !

                        I didn't like 26...Nh3+.I had a bad feeling about it.Wrong or right I wasn't sure.I was sure I wanted the B file.Interesting though.26.h4 makes Bf3 more playable.Oh well its done.

Thnx to Carolus for an enjoyable game.T'was a good fight.

One sure thing : Smash is the Apolyton Chess World Champion.
