  • Weird "Thief II" Crash

I was replaying Thief 2 and was playing the "Blackmail" scenarios, where you break into the sheriff's house to confront him with the incriminating recording of his voice.

Suddenly, the game crashed. When I reloaded it, I found my latest "save" slot was empty and marked as unused. I had previously saved the game in three other slots. Although these are still properly labled, when I try to load them, I'm tossed out of the game again.

Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on???

Not sure? Have you patched the game - this might help a bit?

As for getting back to where you were in the game (or near), you can download save games off the net. I'll look for the site for you.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Ok, http://www.republika.pl/thief_age/thdownl.htm seems to have Thief 2 savegames to download so you can get back to where you were.

Having to resort to other people's saves is annoying. That sounds like one nasty bug.

Most puzzling. I'll try downloading the latest patch.

I though it might be a virus, but I've run both Norton & Grisoft & they show nothing.

By the way...I ran across an acticle on Thief 3. Most of the programmers have been pulled off it to work on Deus Ex II, but they'll be getting back to it. Their best guess is that Thief 3 will be coming out in early 2004.

is thief 2 as good as thief1 was?

and where could I get it? is it abandonware already?
i can't find it anywhere actually...

and i'm a thief addict, poor me!

The Thief games are not abandonware, but you can pick them up pretty cheaply.

Thief 2 isn't as highly polished as Thief 1. Still, there are many improvements over the original, such as scouting orbs (cameras you can throw to look around corners), guards that can't be blackjacked, secret passages to be found. Although the game isn't as highly polished as Thief 1, compared to most other games it is still very high quality. Learn to hate the voice of Karras.

Maybe you can get a copy from eBay?

Wait! Wait! Wait! My computer store has again started carrying Thief 1, Thief 2 & Thief Gold. I think someone has re-released them. (Last year, I bought the last Thief 2 in the store & had to go to the next county to find Thief 1.)

IMHO Thief 2 is better than Thief 1--the controls are a lot easier to use.

I haven't actually played the original Thief. Worth looking at at this late stage?

Looking now. What's special about Thief Gold?

IIRC, it has a couple of extra scenarios.

According to Alinestra, the extra missions drag the story out unnecessarily. I can't comment though, due to a lack of Thief Gold.
