Blitzkrieg is a "new" WWII RTS game recently released. Very historically accurate, especially in the units, which has more than 200 of them. There are no resources, so you have to fight with what troops you start out with without the ability to build more. Infantry cannot destroy tanks with rifles, every unit has a certain supply of ammo and if they run out, supply trucks have to bring in more. Tanks still operate with "hit points," but infantry can destroy a tank's treads with grenades, making it immobile unless you can bring up engineers to fix it. Very difficult game. You can't just rush in all of your units at once and expect to win, real strategy is required.
The single player game has three campaigns, through which you play through 7-10 missions as either the Axis, Soviets, or Western Allies. The Axis and Western Allies campaigns are a little scattered, as they spent a lot of time on many fronts, but the Soviet campaign is really very well done, and has great focus.
You have a squad of three tanks and three artillery pieces at the beginning, and you can upgrade these with better units by fighting random battles inbetween the actual "historical" mission on the map. As you fight more battles, your rank increases also, and when it goes up you get more tanks and artillery to control. Your main tank and artillery squads have their own ranks as well.
The controls are easy to use, and there's the ability to pause the game, and give orders to units to be carried out once the game unpauses, which is really nice. There is some trouble with the paths the units take to where you want them to go, but it's not a substantial problem.
The tutorials are also really good. Playing through them gives you a great feel for how to control all of the tanks, infantry, aircraft, supply trucks, and artillery pieces you'll have under your command.
Sorry if I sound like a salesman at this point, but this game really isn't getting the popularity it deserves.
So, has anyone played it or heard of it? I've completed the Axis campaign, and I'm very close to finishing the Soviet one as well.
