  • Quake 4 screens...

I just found a site with some model art to Quake 4, in case some's interested:

I'm not that interested in it myself... I've never played the first one, while Quake 2 was great... Q3 failed miserably...

I'm just posting this, since there might be others around here who'd like to see those pictures

And you might want to look at this:

Raven Software is looking for a hi-poly modeler who can model sci-fi and fantasy, with an emphasis on realistic science-fiction military characters, bio-mechanical creatures, human and alien weaponry, vehicles, machinery, and world models for Quake 4. The candidate must have experience modeling hi-poly models in the 200,000 to 4,000,000 poly range using Maya or Lightwave. A more realistic modeling style is required with a great understanding of anatomy. Strong artistic/concepting/painting skills would be a major plus, but not required.

I was never a big quake fan, but those do like quite nice. Might have to give it a try.

In what way did Quake 3 "fail miserably"? I was under the impression that it was a great commercial success and still has a big online community.

I don't like it, but I think it was very successful.

I can't describe it, but it just felt like it wasn't the sequel to Quake 2

I'm not that much into FPS games myself, so it has to be special, before I'll like it... and Q3 didn't have any 'Special' feeling...

Quake 3 was a huge success, but I agree that Quake 2 was much better. I was disappointed when I learned there was no single or coop play, only deathmatch. Quake 2 just had so much more style. The Quake 2 done quick stuff was just awesome. A team beat the game w/o any cheating in 12 minutes. You can find the videos at planetquake. I also really loved recording my own demos while playing the game in slow motion. When you play it back it looks like you're a god... perfect accuracy, ridiculous twitch shots that no one can make, dancing on enemies' heads while killing them... great stuff.

IIRC you can set that up by typing
            set fixed_time 1
set maxfps # <- this # will change depending on how slow you want the game to go, also depends on your computer speed
            record filename

after you're done recording, set fixed_time back to 0 and play the demo to see how awesome you are now... demomap filename.dm2

Q3 was huge, and still is big. Fatality is a household name amongst gamers, and Q3 was a WCG game until this year when WC3 edged it out. There are still huge tourneys and leagues in every country I can think of.

Quake as a series lives off of MP, and Q2 was much worse.

Wasn't the reason Q2 fans didn't like Q3 the fact that Q3 was MP?

That was the reason I ignored it. I loved Q2, but the totally MP oriented play of Q3 was kaka to me.

Most MP FPS's are kaka because of the cheats etc involved.

Give a good single player game as well as MP.

                      Q3 was a lot of fun. I never played Q2, so I didn't have that retro-fanboi-disillusionment syndrome.

Fatality is the world's best Quake3 player, as well as some other FPS games. His skill level is extraordinary........history will remember him as one of the original western pro-gamers.

As to the SP/MP debate, both Q1 and Q2 had SP games, but they were crap. Quake has always been about MP, right from the word go. The statement that Q3 failed miserably makes no sense. If SP is your bag, fair enough, but then any version Quake is not really for you.

The Q2 SP was one of the few FPS games, where I actually finished SP...

Not many FPS games can keep my interest, if there's no SP. And not many of those w/story can keep my interest, because of boring story, etc

Sure, I also played Q2 MP a lot...

Have you tried Deus Ex? There's an FPS game with a great story if ever there was one.

Strictly speaking it isn't an FPS, but since you play the game from the first person perspective and spend a lot of time shooting people it's close enough for me.
