Selecting a spot
Post below your choice from the numbered spots on the map. At the next update your nation will be added to the map- it is first-come-first-served, so if somebody has posted before you then they get the spot.
If you request an either/or spot eg. "I will take number 273 or number 452" the first number you give will be regarded as your choice, so other people can remain aware that any other numbers you specify are still open for selection.
Nations which have been in the region for more than ten days, but haven't chosen a spot, will be placed randomly using a random number generating PHP script on the day of the update.
A plain map containing the nation numbers and sea designations can be accessed by clicking here
Primary Nations, Puppets and Expanding your nation over multiple landmasses
Although you may pick whichever spots you like for each of your nations, it may keep the game more interesting if you do not cluster your main nation and other nations controlled by you.
It has become general consensus that a total of 3 landmasses will be granted per user (including puppets).
Any member with more than 2 puppets already placed on the map by the update on 25-04-2004 will retain those spots.
If you wish to claim an additional landmass for your primary nation or puppet then be advised one additional spot per additional 500M (0.5B) population.
i.e.
>1B 1 spot per nation max
1B>=1.5B 2 spots per nation max
1.5B< 3 spots per nation max
Although it is preferred for nations to take AVAILABLE spots, a new primary nation may 'bump' an OCCUPIED spot. (Just be careful whose territory who take over- some may send a few tanks over the border to reclaim what they think is theirs).
Moving your nation
Will be done if you've been placed randomly and don't like your spot. (Despite it's unrealisticness)
If I have incorrectly placed your nation (as I did with Basus) then please post and it will be rectified on the next update.
If you've chosen a spot then you're stuck with it until your nation dies.
Lost nations
Should a nation cease to exist, the spot will be cleared and thus become available for selection.
Reborn Nations
If an expired nation is reactivated then it may has a legitimate claim to a spot should it now be OCCUPIED by another nation or taken by somebody's secondary nation. If a primary nation now occupies the spot then it can be moved or split with the permission of the new occupant.
Modifying your nation
If you wish you may make minor ammendments to your nation and they will be incorporated into the main map.
Following modifications will be incorporated in updates:
* Modifying/Adding/Deleting Rivers (river deletion will not be allowed if said river passes through another nation, modyfied rivers must enter and leave the nation at the same point)
* Modifying/Adding/Deleting small islands along coastlines, or minor modifications to the coastline
* Add a capital city
The only modifications to borders will be to make a nation smaller, or split it into smaller nations (if feasible)
I would suggest taking using the base file (without the colours) to add your detail to:
Base Map, plus Nation Numbers
Colour Matching
If you are adding detail to your nation and want to ensure the colours you use are of the same pallet, view the following file:
Map Colour Info
Political Map Colours
All the colours used are very pretty, but if you don't like the colour your nation has been given, if it is feasible to change it (i.e. no bordering nations with the same colour) then I will.
Flags
Nearly all of the nations have their flag displayed on the map, the only omissions are those that were uploaded to nationstates incorrectly (incorrect file formats). If your flag is omitted or has changed place it a post below (in a suitable format .jpg or .gif are ideal) and it will be added.
Naming Seas
A nation may name a body of water with a designation (see base map, generally it is the larger bodies of water with designations) which it is adjacent to (one per nation) and that name will be added to the master map, again first-come-first-serve.
Smaller seas will not be shown on the main map (it is cluttered enough already!) but can be named and displayed as with the map of Ceroo below)
Objections / Petition for a change to the rules
I'm sure the majority of us are mature enough not to object to any placements or naming of landmarks. If any of the map rules seem unfair then with a majority consensus, I will change them (or if it's a hotly debated change then by poll result), because this map is afterall all of ours...

Updates
Updates will be done on Sundays every other week, if there is a lot to do it will be done weekly again.
