    • Confidential letter to Azani

General Hogan leader of auldonina troops in Azan conflict to the leader of the Free Azani people.

Greetings my dear brethren in this conflict in arms agaisnt oppresion.

As you no doubt ar eaware, our forces have currently placed your beutiful northern city under sige as per your last leter to us.

The Hive are now apparently taking human shields t oprevent further losses.

Rathr than destroying your beuiufl city and losing Azani lives, we wish to tranport into the city your highest trained infilttators and utilise your own armed forces to enter the city. Perhaps then h elcoals will rise up and aid you.

We are sending our fastest transport planes to pick your men up and to deploy them directly into the airport we now control and also the beach head on the northside of the city.

If this is your desire as well, please reply ASAP.

We can hold the city under sige indefinatly as supply lines are opne from your western islesto the beachhead and into the airport too.

We hav egained air superiority and also navla supremeacy in the area.

      Your wiling servant

      General Paul Hogan.

        • INS Endeavour, west of occupied Hive territory (formerly NCC Pavesia)

          "Another wreckage, another merchant vessel".
          "Cerooan?"
          "No, sir"
Captain Landeros let out a sigh, half-relief, half-despair. Even he wasn't sure. Somebody was out here sinking vessels, but who? They picked up on radar a submarine, but it quickly turned and ran. The Cerooan nuclear submarine force [ooc: not used since the joint operation with Guardinia near Centralis] and the INS Blue Star were rumoured to be en route, but nothing was confirmed.
"We were supposed to rendevous with the third fleet two days ago, any word from the admiral?" Landeros asked the communications lieutenant.
"No, sir, we have received no communication from the INC"
"Lets continue south then, no more diversions."

[ooc: the cavalry IS on the way]

          N3 News Bulletin
John Bretos here, on board the INS Herald, with an update: The ADU fleet consisting of the Cerooan third fleet and the Guardinian second fleet is still on the move, heading north along the west coast of Azan. It's not clear exactly where the fleet are heading, I am unable to give you an exact current location, or a destination, however it is rumoured that we will be passing the Auldoninnan fleet who have landed troops on the west side of the island, obviously with past relation with Auldoninna being as they are it could be a tense moment for both sides. The crew seem to be having several battle drills a day, so a naval engagement may be expected, however, I get the feeling that the plan is to land the troops attached to the fleet in the north of Azan, or even in Frankychanland itself, opening another front, to take pressure of Guardinian forces in the south. Several aeroplanes have flown over our position, believed to be Hive fighters monitoring the fleets' movements. I will, of course, keep you posted on any new developments.

The tranport planes landed in Azani territory and picked up the waiting soldeirs. It was all a rush and conducted late at night. As they entered the plane a young corporal smiled and took there old weopons from them and handed them the latest Auldonina weopons. The Azani leader was given a map of the location of the known Hive troops within the city and he sat down to discuss plans with the Auldonina captain.

At the port large transport ships too were filling up with armoured vehicles and jeeps, and yet more Azani troops.

They set sail under guard of the Audlonina Navy and raced full steam ahead to the Beachhead.

The planes of course had already landed at the airport and unlaoding of the first deployment was in place. They would make many more such flights all night.

            • Captain Bridges landed his fighter with the sudden stop at the end signalling the cord had grabbed him. He quickly disembarked and ran to the large tower at the side of the aircraft tower. He was met by Air Commodore Smith and the two quickly moved into the briefing room.

"tell me what happened Bridges" said Smith with a worried look on his face.

"Sir we got entagled with a large bunch of Hive Fighters, both sides took some heavy losses, but finally they broke off and headed home, we were going to chas ethem but our fuel situaiton was low."

"yes i know al lthat bridges"

"After we turned to return to the Amada Lt Anderson reported his fuel was on MT, I asked him to double check his gauges and he reported agian it was MT. "

"Why wasnt he sent home ealrier if it was that critical."

"He never reported in til lwe turned to leave sir, I think he really enjoyed those dogfights with the Hive"

              "Well what next"

"well the next thing I know he has ejected and parachuted down to saftey."

"wel that is good, where did he land, give us the co-ordiantes we will get him"

"Thats the problem sir, he landed ok, but when I did a swoop over to see if he survuved, he had landed right in the middle of the Hive encampment on the outskirts of the city. They obviously had captured him"

              "damn those Hive"

"Sir what are we going to do, he is the son of one of the government ministers, they will not be happy"

"Your right, tell no one, i will repor tto HQ"

              • The Battle of Roshem

                Classified Correspondence

                from: Lt. Hassan Kazemi
                to: Gen. Yoon Hana

                re: Roshem

                ...

Gluckstein’s plan was simple enough: engage the FCL forces head-on by attacking in force up the A-7. Hold them there with their backs against the city (because, of course, they would want to avoid street-to-street fighting in an already-hostile city that was rising up around them) long enough for the ALA guerrillas to come down the valley and finish them off. It would be a hard-fought – but short – battle, followed by a triumphant march into a Roshem liberated by its own citizens.

The Frankychanlandian (-landish? -landic?) commander had other ideas, however. The fighting on Highway 7 was well underway, and the partisans had just overrun the FCL picket on the approach to Highway 55 – so far so good – when the FCLers began falling back into the city.

Once it became clear that Roshem wouldn’t be falling without a fight, Commandante Gluckstein himself led a regiment around northern fringe of the city to help the local militias secure the bridges that span the Emet River. Soon, the eastern shore of the Emet was firmly in Free Azani hands, as what remained of the FCL regiment there had either fled north to After or surrendered.

The city centre was another story. Fighting continued – continues – street-to-street and house-to-house. While it seems clear that the Azanis will overwhelm the FCL garrison eventually, there’s no guarantee, even with Guardinian support, that they’ll do it before Frankychan can send more forces down from Tel Zach.

                  • Took me awhile, but it's done. It's a little busy for my tastes, but I guess that can't be helped.

Each "unit" on the map is about regimental strength, although what constitutes a regiment for the two irregular forces can vary substantially.

                          • "Can you explain to me why the 5th Light Infantry Brigade used up all their bullets shooting at Azani partisans?"

Jose Djordjevic stared down his general. For just a second, the hardened military man averted his gaze.

"It was a mistake. A terrible mistake, by one of the squad leaders. He led his men five miles off their patrol route. He is being disciplined, Mr. President."

Djordjevic sighed. "I read in the National Enquirer that they shouted 'We're Azani! We're Azani!' and our boys kept shooting."

Now the general was staring at the floor. "Sir . . . they were flying an Azani flag and our boys kept shooting."

                            "Casualties?"

                            "No fatalities, sir."

The President sighed again. "It was just yesterday," he said, "that Johnson, that annoying Opposition Whip, was saying our army couldn't have less credibility." Presumably he meant international credibility, because the Karakasian public still backed their army in spite of the violent deaths of nearly 1,000 suspected drug smugglers in the past year.

"And," Djordjevic continued, "we do have an election coming up . . ."

                            Free Azan

Colonel Suzuki's troops were manning a road checkpoint today. It was his idea. Night patrols were, apparently, not his men's friend. His reverie was interrupted by a harsh voice.

                            "Hey! You speak English?"

The squad leader who fired on the Azanis was named Manuel. Back in Adailton the colonel had once overheard him saying to someone how attractive the local girls found men in uniform - even a non-com like him. But now that he was in hostile territory, Manuel didn't seem to be taking it very well. Suzuki groaned inwardly as he watched Manuel grab the teenager by the collar.

"¿Usted habla español?" with the sarcastic accent on usted. Suzuki hurried over to Manuel and shoved his arms through the younger man's, breaking his grip on the Azani's shirt.

"Manuel! Get the f*** out of here. Now!" he bellowed, as Manuel attempted to protest. "And the rest of you, keep your f***ing eyes on the checkpoint."

Manuel was slow to leave. The colonel grabbed him by the shoulder and spun him around. "What are you thinking?" he hissed. "I have half a mind to dishonorably discharge you. Your behavior is a f***ing disgrace."

"He started it," Manuel sneered. "Him and his buddies were laughing at us."

Suzuki's voice got quieter, not louder. "Tomorrow another Hercules is coming from Alecrast with the Kyralian soldiers. When it leaves, you are going to be on it. Take your uniform, leave your gun, and go home. You're a disgrace to that uniform and I hope I never see you again."
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

                            • Guardinian 1st Armor Divisional HQ on the move, approaching Roshem from the south on the A-7

In a command vehicle rumbling north along the A-7, two officers were busy wondering what to do next...
"Oh cripes! Sounds like the Azanis are bogged down up ahead. I thought they were supposed to have taken the city by now."
"Yes, our orders were to help bolster its' defenses, not to engage in offensive operations against FCL defenders."
"Still, those ALA people have seen us coming. They're counting on our support now."
                              The other one nodded thoughtfully.
"Yes... but I'm not going to charge in there and engage in offensive operations without a clear mandate."
"No, I suppose that wouldn't be prudent."
He paused for a moment. "So, what do we do now, sir?"
"I'll get in touch with Central Command and request instructions. Then we'll take it from there."
                              "Okay, sounds good... Ah... sir?"
                              "Yes, colonel?"
"Do we halt the advance while we wait for instructions?"
"No, let's just keep rolling for now. Hopefully, we will have an answer before we're in too deep."
                              "Yes, sir."

                              Another brief pause.

"Sir, what if the FCL guys engage us first?"
"In that case, we won't have to ask any more questions, will we?"
                              "No, sir, we won't."
"Politics is to say you are going to do one thing while you're actually planning to do someting else - and then you do neither."
