  • "The war that never ended, is over"

In an address televised live on Southern News, President Jose Djordjevic shocked the nation and the region when he announced the culmination of secret negotiations with the breakaway island of Kyralia.

He delivered a pleasant surprise. After being technically at war for almost fifty years, the governments of Karakas and Kyralia had agreed on a formula for reunification.

Kyralia's government accepted a proposal which would allow the island to keep certain of its socialist / communist policies. President Djordjevic has reportedly introduced a bill to the Assembly which, if approved, will change the relationship of the states and territories to the capital, granting them more freedom to make laws and decide trade policies.

The bill is currently expected to be approved, and if it does, Kyralia will reunify with Karakas. The island has had no diplomatic relations with the mainland or most nations of Apolyton since separation in 1958.

The prospect of reuniting the territories of medieval Karakas, after 46 years of ideological division, will excite many people in both countries. Opinion polls suggest that around 60% of Kyralians and almost four-fifths of Karakasians favor reunification.
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

OOC: I just got the issue about local councils. So naturally I thought it'd be a chance to have a happy ending of sorts. Feel free to comment in an in-character fashion if you like.

The people of Jonchastan salute the courageous decision by the Capitalist States of Karakas and the People's Republic of Kyralia to set aside their differences and unite for the greater good of their citizens.

As you well know, we have been critical in the past of the actions and policies of both nations. Hopefully, by working together to find peaceful solutions to your shared problems, you will achieve a greater level of freedom and democracy for all Karakasians and Kyralians. This, in turn, will put your reunified nation in greater stead with the other peaceloving and democratic nations of our great region.

The citizens of Twilemen were overjoyed by the news of the reuniting of Karakas and Kyralia. Dispite reassurance by the government, many of them feared that the violence between the two areas might someday involve other Apolytonian nations. The people of Twilemen would like to comend these nations for their willingness to overcome their diffence in hopes of achieving peace.

Auldonina being the peaceful nation we are, we agree this war ending is very timely. We will continue to trade with the new combined nation as well as we did with them indivudually...

Ceroo would like to congratulate the Kyralian people on ending their isolation and reuniyfing with their people.

Ceroo, also divided into regional councils, agrees that this is an apt choice for governening the unified nation, as it prings politics closer to the people.

OOC: Note that there hasn't been major shooting since 1958 - but the countries never signed a peace treaty, like the Koreas. /OOC

This morning, the Assembly voted on the President's regional council proposal, accepting it by a margin of 91-4, with two abstentions and three members absent. The Assembly also set a date for the changes to take effect.

Later in the day, the Central Committee of the Kyralian Communist Party unanimously voted for reunification with Karakas.

The government is now in discussion with regional delegates from Kyralia, as well as Adailton, Diego Garcia, and the mainland states, to determine the exact nature of the government that will come into existence.

It is believed that Kyralia's four army divisions, two naval divisions, and single air force division will be upgraded, and then either converted to Kyralian National Guard or Federal Armed Forces units.

The country's name will also be changed yet again, to the "Republican League of Karakas."

OOC: You may notice I have already changed the name on NationStates.net.

The unified governments would be glad to welcome the trade expedition, and any other visitors. Our nation hopes and prays for strong relations with Basus. We believe that we have more in common than in difference, and that this truth will come through.

                            Regards,
