As long as it doesn't appear just a bit too convenient (e.g. having a pre-prepared countermeasure to someone else's secret weapon when you'd said nothing about this before), announcing it upon completion or when you're going to use it should be fine. Otherwise, just inform some people you can trust not to give the secret away, so that they can back you up when you say you've been developing something for ages.
